‘God’s Purpose for Israel’ #1 Romans chapter 9 Chapters 9 to 11 - an aside or the climax “Israel” used times only here 37 Old Testament quotations The longest letter in the New Testament Why did Paul write to the Romans? He had a need to write to the Roman Christians OR There was some major issue in the Roman church

Paul wrote letters between 52 and 64/67 AD Wrote to the Romans about 57 or 58 AD The Roman Church: Perhaps began with Pentecost converts Grew into a mixed race church 49AD Claudius banished all Jews from Rome and church became Gentile 12 years later when the Jews invited back, the church didnt welcome them

Perhaps the beginning of anti-semitism and replacement theology: that the church has replaced Israel. A desperately, divisive issue that could create two churches, & spread throughout the Empire. So Paul writes a long letter to an unknown church to rebuke the Gentiles & persuade them

Summary of Romans chapters 1 to 8 Chapters 1-3: All have sinned Chapter 3: All are saved through faith in Christ Chapter 4: All are sons of Abraham Chapters 5-7: All have reverted/back-sliden to old ways Chapter 8: All need the freedom & power of Holy Spirit “if you separate into different churches, you are forgetting the gospel.”

Summary of Romans chapters 9 – In the past, Israel has been selected (Ch 9) 2. In the present, Israel is being stubborn (Ch 10) 3. In the future, Israel will be saved. (Ch 11) Chapter 9 can be divided as: The Israel of God (v1-13) & The God of Israel (v14-20)

How odd of God, to choose the Jews. But not so odd as those who choose a Jewish God, yet spurn the Jews.
