The Romans Dylan Williams – Oak Class

The Romans The Romans came from Rome in Italy. Legend says the city was founded by Romulus and Remus in 753BC They ruled over a huge empire. They spoke Latin. Roman men wore togas, the women wore tunics and rich women wore gold jewellery.

Roman Houses Roman country houses were called villas. It was easy to tell if a Roma was rich or poor by the size and the material the house was made of; poor Romans had houses made of wood, rich Romans had houses made of stone and often had mosaic floors. Mosaics are patterns made of small stone tiles. Romans invented plumbing and under floor heating. The lighting was by oil lamps.

Roman Gods Ancient Romans believed in many different Gods. These Gods represented different things. My favourite Gods are; Jupiter – King of the Gods, God of thunder and lightening. Neptune – God of the sea Mars – God of war Hadys – God of the underworld, he had a three headed dog called Cerberus.

Gladiators Gladiators were slaves or prisoners made to fight each other or wild animals for entertainment. Before the battle a gladiators would get a massage. At the end of a gladiator fight the emperor or ‘mob’ would decide if a gladiator lived or died by giving a thumbs up or down sign. Gladiators were called different names according to their weapons. Four kinds of gladiator were; 1.Murmillo gladiators had armour sword and large shield. 2.Thracian gladiators wore leg coverings, they used a curved sword and a small, square shield. 3.Retiarius gladiators used a fishing net and a trident 4.Provocator gladiators had the heaviest armour, a shield and a short sword.

Corinium Museum, Cirencester We had a school trip to the Corinium Museum in Cirencester, it was very interesting. We learnt about Roman houses, mosaics, soldiers, coins and clothing. I bought a silver Roman sword with a gold handle. I also went with my Mum, I wrote my name in Roman letters, made a mosaic and tried on the Roman soldier’s helmet it was very heavy!

Corinium Museum, Cirencester Here are some photos of me at the Corinium Museum and dressed as a Roman soldier:

I have really enjoyed learning about the Romans. We also had a Roman day at School and did a class Assembly. I talked about the God Neptune. Here are some photos of our assembly:
