A group of two or more related words that do not contain a subject/verb combination is known as a phrase. Phrases are classified into three major types: prepositional, participial, and infinitive. What Is a Prepositional Phrase? A prepositional phrase is a group of words (usually 3 to 5 words) that begins with a preposition. Examples: in a yellow house; over the large hill; at the small pond Prepositional phrases typically end with a noun or pronoun or a noun phrase (with a determiner and an adjective or two, followed by a pronoun or noun ). The preposition connects its object (the noun or pronoun) to some other part of the sentence. A whole prepositional phrase takes on a modifying role, as an adjective or an adverb. So it is usually (1) to locate something in time and space,(2) to modify a noun, or (3) to tell when or where or under what conditions something happened) Ex (1): The students in Room 421 cheered.
