EFNEP & SNAP-Ed Research – Why do we do it?

Why do research? Research provides up-to-date, reliable, unbiased information

Where does research-based information come from? Universities Government

Research Project Updates Healthy Babies Assessing the Quality of Life of EFNEP & SNAP-Ed Participants and Educators An Evaluation of the Use of a 24-Hour Recall as a Measure of Change in Nutrient Intake in Participants in EFNEP Developing Nutrition Behavior Checklists Online Training of ESBA Supplemental Lessons for Nutrition Educators

Healthy Babies Audience: Low-income mothers of infants (targeted during pregnancy and followed through the baby’s first year) Goals: Help infants develop healthy eating habits and decrease the risk of becoming overweight by providing a series of one-on-one lessons, to teach new mothers about: Infant-centered feeding (using baby’s hunger and fullness cues) Appropriate transition to feeding infants solid foods Counties: Eagle and Weld

Healthy Babies Outcomes Classes are all complete; currently waiting on a few more people to receive their last data collection Enrolled a total of 374 moms and their babies Currently 129 participants have finished the program 18 participants still need to receive their last data collection

Assessing the Quality of Life of EFNEP & SNAP-Ed Participants Audience: EFNEP and SNAP-Ed participants from around the country. Goals: The goals of this study are to: Assess how participating in EFNEP and SNAP-Ed effects the quality of life of participants after graduation Assess how working for EFNEP and SNAP-Ed effects the quality of life of educators

An Evaluation of the Use of a 24-Hour Recall as a Measure of Change in Nutrient Intake in Participants in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program Audience: Paraprofessional nutrition educators Goals: Explore the use of the 24-hour recall to measure change in participants’ dietary intake after completing EFNEP. Compare 24-hour recall collected by paraprofessional nutrition educators to recalls taken by registered dietitians. Is the 24-hour recall a good way to measure the change in intake after clients have completed EFNEP?

Developing Nutrition Behavior Checklist Questions Audience: Adults who participate in EFNEP classes. Goal: To create a new set of national EFNEP behavior checklist questions that measure changes in nutrition behaviors and diet quality as a result of participating in EFNEP. Steps: 1.Look at what participants learn about nutrition and their diets in EFNEP across the nation. 2.Create a new set of behavior checklist questions about nutrition and what participants eat. 3.Test the new questions with participants.

Online training of ESBA supplemental Lessons for Nutrition Educators Audience: Paraprofessional Nutrition Educators Goals: 1) Determine the online training needs and format for paraprofessional nutrition educators in preparation for teaching the ESBA supplemental lessons. 2) Create and deliver the online training of the ESBA supplemental lessons to paraprofessional nutrition educators. 3) Evaluate the online training of the ESBA supplemental lessons for paraprofessional nutrition educators.
