Electoral College vs. Popular Vote Lesson 2-7

Electoral College Map

Electoral College Votes are cast by Electoral College members. Presidential candidates must receive 51% of the electoral college votes in order to become president. The number of Electoral College votes per state is based on the number of members that state has in Congress. Example: Kansas has 2 Senators and 4 Representatives so Kansas has 6 Electoral College votes. Electoral College members are elected from each state.

Popular Vote Votes are cast by American citizens in all 50 states. All citizens 18 years and older can vote. Presidential candidates who receive the most popular votes may not always become president. Example: 2000 election Al Gore received the most popular vote, but since George W. Bush received the majority of electoral college votes he became president. This has actually happened several times in our history. The candidate who receives the most votes in each state usually receive the electoral college votes from that state. This may not always happen
