Walk-in Cardiff Met Julie Neenan Information Advisor – Electronic Services

Schedule: pick ‘n’ mix Background & key drivers How to use our service Technical solution Licensing What’s next? Lessons learnt

Our ‘Walk-in Access’ journey On our radar since st approach using OPAC machines in 2010 Realised IT involvement / collaboration vital 2 nd attempt (2012) as part of reciprocal borrowing scheme in Cardiff / WHELF project

Walk-in Met Trial June – September 2012; no users  Soft launch - live since Oct users Only available at our Llandaff Learning Centre Considering rolling out to other 2 campuses Working with Alumni office on promotion Would welcome public library referrals

Drivers Opening up service / resources to community – 75% of budget now spent on ‘e’ (public money) Raise profile of institution & library Demand for service from public, alumni and ex- staff members

How to use our service Ideally make contact before you come Website: You must be 18+ & bring 2 forms of ID with you (one photo ID) every time you visit Complete a registration form every time Sign to receive the ‘disposable’ login / accept the IT conditions of use Access 40+ resources / ask for help if needed Complete feedback form about service

Technical solution we chose THE KIT: Thin Client PCs - limited apps. “Web Stations” – dual access Accessible workstations In a public area / concourse Issue Desk nearby No printing – but have USB, Microsoft Office, database specific functionality to

Technical solution we chose THE TECHY PARTS: IT dept created programme to generate logins from Issue desk Once logged in Internet browser ‘locked down’ Control access to resources via IP recognition Adopted ‘blocked’ list approach as opposed to ‘safe list’

Licensing

The Good Full list of 40+ resources online - Quick wins: – JISC / Eduserv model licenses – EBSCO – Proquest - Evidence of standardised language in licenses – understanding of requirements for HEIs

The Bad Market Research Publishers Law Publishers - Straight ‘no’, see as detrimental to business? Will they ever change?

The Ugly Problems of how to deal with walk-in access for: non-IP authenticated resources? Journal platforms / publishers with different rules for each title? - Further collaboration amongst HEI’s required? Tools like Knowledge Base + could help?

What’s next? Promotion: alumni & public libraries Roll out to other 2 campuses Continue to negotiate / query licenses & add resources Investigate: SUMMON search box specific for walk-in? Review technical solution in light of new developments with Shibboleth extensions

Lessons learnt Review your identity management systems / protocols at the outset. Ongoing commitment – consider as part of core service. Staff training? Obtaining feedback? Statistics? Commit resources & time
