Warm-Up:  What does “Old World” and “New World” mean to you?

Columbian Exchange Activity  In groups, list the items you were given  Decide which items originated in the “Old World” and which items originated in the “New World”  Carefully tape the items on the correct side of the world map…and let’s see who did the best!!  Glue in your Columbian Exchange list

 To find gold  To conquer the Aztecs

 Landed in present day Mexico in1519  Sank ships so soldiers could not retreat › Victory at any cost!  Attacked and conquered the Aztecs in 1521  Cortes built a new city on the ruins of Aztec capital Tenochtitlan › This became the capital of New Spain (later Mexico City) related&safety_mode=true&persist_safety_mode=1&safe=a ctive

 Faced overwhelming odds  Aztecs ruled over a vast area and millions of people  Did not know the land or language

 Increased Spanish exploration of the New World  New Spain became the starting point for exploration

 Searching for a northern waterway to the Pacific Ocean

 Set sail in 1519  Sailed along the Gulf Coast  First known European to see the Texas Coast (but there is no evidence Pineda entered Texas)

 There were NO maps available to him

 First map of the Gulf of Mexico and the Texas coast  Their voyage increased Spanish interest in the region

 Used his observations and a simple compass

How did he do? Compare Pineda’s map to satellite photo of Gulf Coast.

They have small horns, like Moorish cattle, and very long hair, wooly like a rug.  Washed ashore in Florida They got lost in the swamps  They then built boats that shipwrecked near today’s Galveston

 The Karankawa found the struggling explorers and took them in and shared their small amount of food and clothes › Most of the Spaniards died that winter › Those who lived became their captives

 Cabeza de Vaca worked as a servant, trader, and healer  Traveled the Gulf Coast gathering sea shells and mesquite beans to trade for animal skins

 Met 3 other Spanish explorers being held as slaves and finally escaped.  The 4 men traveled from Native village to village in search of New Spain

In Florida:  Got lost in the swamps  Lacked food and supplies and attacked by Native Americans In Texas:  Shipwrecked near present day Galveston  No clothes, food, or supplies  Lost and taken captive by Native Americans

 8 years after the shipwreck he met up with Spanish soldiers and was taken to New Spain › In 1542 Cabeza de Vaca published a book about his travels
