Primary School of Kampos “Panagiotis Hiotis”

The earthquake in 1953 destroyed most of the monuments of the cultural development of the island, and the few still remaining give only a slight glimpse of its glorious past.

Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion

Introduction A lot of Zakynthians refer to the island as “Fioro di Levante” (“flower of the East”). Due to the earthquake of 1953 the students don’t have the actual icon of the island’s glimpse that can justify this compellation. They have to study culture, history, art, museums, music, monuments and even the local vocabulary, in order to understand this characterization initially given to the island by the Venetians.

Task The aim of the project is to create a history dossier, refering to Zakynthos before the earthquake of 1953, consisted of:  a power point presenting the islands history from the prehistoric period up to the 20 th century (1953)  a photo album with photos, sketches and paintings of old Zakynthos  a brochure of the students’ visit to old Zakynthos titled: “If I had a time machine I would like to visit Zakynthos in …(historical period)

Process Each student will start the research by surfing in the following sites, in order to have a general view of Zakynthos’ history The students are now aware about the subject of the project and can continue The next step is to divide the students into 6 groups of four members. Each group has a particular task: - 1 st group: The history of Zakynthos - 2 nd group: Zakynthian art and artists - 3 rd group: Monuments of the past that don’t exist nowadays - 4 th group: Music and musians - 5 th group: Local Zakynthian Vocalbury - 6 th group: Natural beauties of the island Each group has a coordinator that distributes and supervises the work and each member is equally responsible for the final result of the task
