The Roaring 20’s! 1920’s- life in Europe very difficult due to recovery from WWI In the U.S, things were the best ever! Jobs were abundant, new inventions fueled the economy, and women were receiving more rights than ever –1920- women get to vote with the passage of the 23 rd Amendment!

Causes of the Great Depression 1. Stock market crash of due to buying on credit, market crashed & millions lost their entire fortunes & investments 2. Farmers producing a surplus of food –Surplus drove down prices –Farms declared bankruptcy 3. Severe drought which “blew away” farms –Created the “dust bowl” in the west

Roosevelt’s “New Deal” F.D.R. elected in His plan to save the U.S. from the Great Depression is known as the “New Deal”. Plan based on the 3 “r”s: –Relief-quickly help the poor –Recovery-create programs to recover –Reform- make changes to prevent this again

Parts of the New Deal 1. Social Security Act (SSA)-provide retirement for workers 2. Federal Deposit Insurance (FDIC)- protect $ deposited in banks 3. Works Progress Administration (WPA)- provide jobs for unskilled workers 4. Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)- provide jobs for men 17-23

5. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)-built dams to bring electricity to the poor, rural South. (Important to Alabama) 6. Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)- gave loans to farmers to not grow crops! *Plan worked! By 1941, the Great Depression was over!
