About the author Yosiko Uchida was born in 1922 in Alameda California and spent most of her life in Berkeley before passing away in She contributed many books to the world of children's literature, focusing the themes of them on the Japanese- American experience, especially interment of Japanese- Americans in camps during WW II. She knew little about Japanese language but was regarded as the symbol of Japanese culture by mainstream America. Her autobiography The Invisible Thread – the powerful memoir of a girl consigned to a concentration camp – by the US government.
