A MAKE AND TAKE BY LINDA TISDALE Clinometers

Where are we in the binder? GLOBE Day 1 Outline Letter “E” Teacher’s Guide pp

What is a Clinometer? A tool for measuring angles to determine heights of objects without directly measuring them. An instrument that measures the steepness of slope.

It is used by:  Highway construction engineers to measure angles of the land,  Movie production engineers to measure the height of the sun,  And by forestry engineers to measure the height of trees. Source:

“What Factors Affect Our Body of Water?” Slope Rate of water flow Amount of soil moved into the water Type of soil moved into the water See page 30

Materials for Each Person Page 34 One Metal Washer 15 cm of Dental Floss A LARGE Drinking Straw One File Folder One Plastic Sheet Protector A Thumbtack to punch a hole

Things to Remember at the Site The person holding the clinometer should be at point “X.” Person 2 will go about 50 m out away from “Person X.” A third person is needed to read the clinometer. Slope is labeled on the Hydrology Site Map (p. 38)

You Can Measure A Tree Height Look at the top of a tree through your straw. Move back (still looking at the tree top) until your clinometer (the washer) is on 45 degrees. Then measure your height (only your eyes to the ground). And the distance from your feet to the tree base. Lastly, add the measurements together: this is the height of the tree.

Message in a Bottle Students will use longitude & latitude to locate positions. You can tie it in to math class: Graphing Plotting Points X-axis Y-axis Don’t forget about Alabama History: How could you make a similar game using points in Alabama? Play the game during the song!
