My decision tree: Does it affect the delivery of the program? Does it affect the student experiences?

My decision tree: Does it provide better opportunities for our students? Will it improve the product or affect the product in a negative fashion?

Mission Graduates of the program will be scholars and scientists in rehabilitation science, teach at the university level, direct discipline specific educational programs, work in rehabilitation services field, and collaborate with other professionals on issues related to rehabilitation and health.

You will be competent to function independently as a scholar and scientist. Take this to all levels of academia or business ----teacher, administrator etc etc.

TO Do’s Meet with your advisor Co-Chairs Arrange your Committee Arrange Student Evaluations Arrange and submit Research and Teaching Assistantship Forms to me or Dr. Olson

Annual Evaluation Forms Complete the Form Review assessment with one or both of your faculty advisors. Discuss your areas of strength and areas that might need work. You should have a copy of that information on the assessment form.

Annual Evaluation Forms seful%20documents.html –go to form

Your advisors then discuss this document with the program faculty

The faculty share their input from the student performance form.

Annual Evaluations from Program Director The evaluation will state that you are either making satisfactory or unsatisfactory progress.

There are several responsibilities we expect annually from students in the doctoral program. These include: Revise and submit a Program of Study annually. Attend the Fall and Spring Colloquiums

Introduce Dr. Anne Olson

Advise myself or the Director of Graduate Studies if you (will) take a leave of absence from courses or the program Update and meet with your Advisors to update the Assessment of Student Performance form

Verify that the documentation above has been delivered to our office. While it has not been enforced in the past, students are to enroll in RHB 770 for two semesters for credit and are required to participate in subsequent seminars for zero credits. This is an expectation that faculty have raised on several occasions and is being included in this evaluation.

University Requirements for a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy “The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is conferred upon a candidate who, after completing graduate work devoted to study of a special field of knowledge,

1) passes comprehensive examinations in the chosen field and the dissertation subject, 2) presents a satisfactory dissertation, and 3)shows evidence of scholarly attainment.” (University of Kentucky, The Graduate School, Bulletin, Fall 2006, current/AdvancedDegrees.shtml )

Research Apprenticeship Three different research apprenticeships are required (9 credits minimum, need not be 3 credits each) -One outside the student’s discipline -One with one of the student’s committee chairs

Time to Qualifying Examination Graduate School Council has voted to limit time to Qualifying Examination to 5 years for students starting Fall 2005 & after: –One year extension may be obtained from the Dean of the Graduate School (this should be easy to obtain, but anything more than one year will be very difficult)

Qualifying Examination The student’s Advisory Committee, following program faculty recommendations, will develop the examination. Will include closed book in-house section, open book off campus section and oral defense.

Dissertation Students entering after Fall 2005 enroll in a 2 credit hour RHB 767 Dissertation Residency Credit every fall and spring semester until they have completed and defended their dissertation. Student has 5 years, following the semester of successful completion of the comprehensive examination, to complete all degree requirements.

Advisory Committee Establish committee as soon as possible, but no later than after 18 credits have been taken

The Advisory Committee must consist of: a) co-chairs: one must have full UK Graduate Faculty status & one, but not both, should be in your discipline (this is a program requirement to reflect our interdisciplinary nature and is not a university requirement)
