Cognitive Apprenticeship Cognitive Apprenticeship: An Overview by Victoria Vasquez National University Dr. Cynthia Sistek-Chandler June 2007 EDX 1201 Assignment #2 : Unit 2 Learning Theory

Definition : Cognitive Apprenticeship Learning within a relationship with a more expert practitioner of the skill to be learned. A strategy for teaching complex mental behaviors to increase the emphasis on thinking or inquiry skills. RESOURCE: Grabe, Mark; Grabe, Cindy Integrating Technology for Meaningful Learning. 5 th edition. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company

Involve students in learning as apprentices: work alongside students and/or set up situations that will cause students to begin to work on problems even before fully understanding them. A key aspect of an "apprenticeship" approach to teaching involves breaking the problem into parts so that students are challenged to master as much of a task as they are ready to handle.
