Collecting Data

Overview Approval (IRB) Prepare (protocol, practice) Recruit (getting subjects) Conduct (forms, practice)

Approval (IRB) First, general rules and commonalities between universities (Belmont Report) (APA Ethics code - Second, specific rules for LMU Why? The SAME rules… … applied DIFFERENTLY by each school

General Rules Decision:benefits > risk - Benefits:knowledge, society, progress (1 question) - Risk:harm, lawsuits (all other questions, ~100+) So mindset is on risk (e.g., protect university at all costs) and not on benefits (e.g., see research/researchers as problems) Process:You Psychology Rep (gate-keeper) If “expedited”, then Full board approval If “exempt”, then looser standards “Exempt” – small to no risk “Expedited” – risk exists, such as deception, children, etc) (each university has guidelines for what qualifies as exempt)

Major Issues Informed Consent Confidentiality Debriefing

Loyola Webpage (1) Certificate of Completion - on-line tutorial (2) Fill-out forms (3) Submit by 1 st of month (4) Send the forms to Birute Viliesis the Chair of the IRB Committee c/o the Sponsored Projects, Office in University Hall.

Forms (1) Application –see second document listed on IRB webpage (2) New, Renewal, or Continuing Form –“New” located in first document listed on IRB webpage called “Human Subjects in Research Policy” (HSRP) –Can’t find Renewal or Continuing (3) Research Protocol –1-2 page description of study (4) Informed Consent –Informed Consent Form – see page 15 of HSRP for questions, and see example consent form listed third on IRB webpage and listed on page 17 of HSRP –Can waive consent form if satisfy the criteria listed on page 14 of HSRP, and the IRB approves your waiver (5) other Supplemental Materials as necessary (e.g., Application for Exemption, copy of your Completion Certificate, a copy of Grant Application if funded)

Issues Collaborate with another school –If get IRB approval from other school, ask LMU IRB if they want either a copy of that IRB, or a separate LMU IRB Changes –Technically, must submit amendment if make changes, but… Co-investigators –If you have RAs, do they need to complete the online certification? Sponsors –Application asks for faculty sponsor (if applicable) and Department Chair

Issues Department? –Application asks for “department”? Exemption Application – asks for 1-2 page summary; is this the same as Protocol? Protocol –definitely ask someone from LMU Psychology Department to look over your submission before submitting to IRB

Prepare Develop protocol – instructions/script for experimenters Anticipate all problems/issues beforehand – you want to prepare for all eventualities because at least some will occur Practice – train experimenters, you should conduct the study yourself for 5-10 times

Recruit See “Subjects” PowerPoint

Conduct Order always the same –Consent Form –Instructions –Study –Debriefing Research Tips Internet Research -

Advanced Sources The day-to-day knowledge about collecting data is housed in the apprenticeship model (graduate-to- graduate student training within Lab Groups), and not in books, which is why I started the PsychWiki pages: Research Tips - Internet Research -
