Changes in Objectives The Installation of a Firewall has been added  Adds extra security to the network  With the installation of a Firewall students can’t bypass the proxy server and access blocked websites NUOL Internet Application Services What did we plan to do…

What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services By Rizwan Aslam Khan

Accomplished - Services User quota is set on Web, FTP and Mail user accounts  Saves valuable disk space  Space on hard drives is shared among students and staff at NUOL. What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Services Shell Script to generate Web, FTP and Mail accounts for users has been made  In order to create an account students must fill in a form which is created by the team Why a form to create Mail accounts?  Obtain user details and their consent for future reference What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Services DNS and DHCP Servers are installed Proxy Server has been installed  Caching of websites is functional Frequently visited websites load fast Efficient use of available bandwidth  Blocking of websites is functional Web addresses are checked every time with a collection of illegal websites and in-ethical words. What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Services File Server has been installed  Few user accounts have been generated Script to create more accounts has been made available  Students and staff can access their files from anywhere on the network What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Services Firewall has been installed  initially not an objective  Upon arrival the need for a firewall became clear to the team Blocks attacks from outside the network Prevents the students to bypass the proxy server and access blocked websites NUOL Internet Application Services What have we accomplished…

Accomplished - Services Dail-up service has been installed  Students and staff having a valid dial-up account can access the internet from a remote location What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Documentation Documentation for local system administrators has been setup on the following services:  Proxy Server  File Server  Dial-up Server  Web Server  Mail Server  Setting User Quota’s  Generating User Accounts What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Documentation 2 groups of system administrators (SA)  SA at the IT Center  SA from the Faculties The SA from different faculties were trained on the installation of Basic Services (Web and ) Proper documentation was provided before the training What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Documentation For the training of the SA, Web and lab procedures from KTH were enhanced What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Documentation Enhancements made:  Remove redundant information in lab instructions Too much text confuses trainees  Steps in setting up the services were clarified  Code has clearly been highlighted  Translation of the documents for better understanding What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Training The System administrators were trained on setting up Web and Mail Servers  Tools Used In the training Handouts of the Labs Whiteboard Multimedia projector for demonstration What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Accomplished - Training After the training sessions, NIAS team has reviewed the trainings  Some SA did setup the service and some were still struggling  Conclusion Repetition of the Trainings needed What have we accomplished… NUOL Internet Application Services

Challenges Encountered… Internet Application team NUOL Internet Application Services

Challenges Main challenges the team has faced  Insufficient Information flow  Hardware Delays  Incorrect Hardware Challenges Encountered… NUOL Internet Application Services

Challenges - Information flow Due to cultural differences as well as language barriers information was hard to access Solution  Ask a lot of questions Challenges Encountered… NUOL Internet Application Services

Challenges – Hardware delay Hardware for the servers arrived after 4 weeks in the implementation period Solution  Install services on normal workstation and then copy the configuration files to the actual server when they arrived Challenges Encountered… NUOL Internet Application Services

Challenges – Hardware delay Concerning the File Server  High End Server ordered Delivery time  Last day in the afternoon No time to configure the service on the newly arrived server Solution  Lao Team members have the proper knowledge and documentation to copy the configurations to the new Server. Challenges Encountered… NUOL Internet Application Services

Challenges – Incorrect Hardware Dail-up  Vendor supplied a router with a digital dial-up solution when an analog was needed and asked for! Solution  After long discussions the team ordered the analog module which arrived 3 days before departure  After working till 23:00 on the last workday, the Dial- up Service finally was launched and properly tested Challenges Encountered… NUOL Internet Application Services
