Balance and Time Management

A Week in the Life… ► There are only 168 hours to be spent in a week ► How many are you spending in class, in meetings, doing homework, working at a job, sleeping, eating, practicing for sing or preparing for an event? ► How many hours are left for you, your family, your faith, your relationships?

Being Selective ► In Involvement ► In Leadership

Uncovering Your Motivation… ► Three Motivations of Workaholics:  Job Demands  Work Capacity  Identity ► Why Are You Involved?  To beef up your resume?  To be admired, respected, or liked?  Because you don’t have anything better to do?  Because you find genuine joy, value, and fulfillment in what you are doing?

Determining Priorities ► The 3 R’s:  Reward: ► What gives me the greatest joy?  Requirement: ► What am I obligated to? ► Must Do’s vs. Choose to Do’s  Results: ► What brings the greatest return? ► What utilizes my greatest strengths?

A Few More Questions… ► Is this consistent with my priorities? ► Is this within my area of competence? ► Can someone else do it better? ► What do my trusted friends and family members say? ► How does this involvement affect my personal well-being, relationships, and academics?

Setting Meaningful Boundaries ► Formulating a Routine, Making Plans, and Sticking to Them  Calendar or Planner  Note card or To-Do List  Microsoft Outlook Features ► Calendar ► Reminders ► To-Do List  Question Everything: Is this Really Necessary?

Guarding Your Downtime ► Honoring the “Sabbath,” Whatever that Means for you…  A Particular Day of the Week  A Particular Time of Day  A Personal Ritual  A Favorite Television Show ► Be aware of the hectic times that threaten your Sabbath (Recruitment, Sing, etc.)

Learning How To Handle Distractions ► The Constant Pull of Technology  Turn off your cell phone  Screen your calls  Don’t even open Internet Explorer  Know your limits with television and music ► The discernment to recognize when to embrace distractions and when to tune them out

Doing the Things We All Know To Do But Don’t… ► SLEEP, for Goodness Sake!!! ► Diet and Exercise ► Stress Relief

Learning to Say “No” ► Say “No” to the proposition, not the person ► Respond in terms of the other person’s best interest ► Defer creatively  Use your Connections  Offer alternatives

Delegating and Asking For Help ► Why it Matters:  For Your Health  For the Future of Your Organization ► This May be Necessary on Multiple Levels:  With your Professors  With Your Friends and Roommates  With your Fellow Officers  With your Advisor

Getting Realistic About Perfectionism ► You cannot do everything ► You cannot do everything well ► Excellence and perfectionism are not one in the same ► There will always be something to be done ► There will always be someone or something vying for your time ► Life does not slow down
