FBLA An Advisor’s 11 Rules for Success

Rule #1 Organization is Key Meet with officers and plan a program of work - navigate members to make wise chapter decisions – so they take ownership. Give every member a FBLA Calendar which clearly states times and locations for meetings, field trips, parent meeting dates, competitions, socials and community outreach. Keep member information sheets on file Document everything!

Rule #2 Advisors Wear Many Hats Teacher Editor Fashion Consultant Counselor Maid Cook Nurse Advocate Chauffer Fan Head hunter Job coach Police officer Coach Listener Believer

Rule #3 Work Smarter Not Harder Create a spreadsheet with members names. Merge names into invitations, letters, certificates. Create an group for members and parents - delegate Create a web page to promote/communicate your chapter - delegate Have members design PowerPoints to use for recruiting (aired on Channel 1)

Rule #4 Your Energy Impacts Theirs Make a BIG DEAL about little things. Air member of the month on school news Use enthusiasm when preparing for competitions Create a FBLA News bulletin board with post-its for students to communicate news – announce at the beginning of class. Pass out certificates for member recognition and have a small ceremony

Rule #5 Always Promote Your Team E-newsletters or hard copies with student submissions Updated web page – give them a reason to visit Staff appreciation days PTSA newsletter submissions Yahoo Groups updates Share accomplishments with department, staff, central office Chapter t-shirts (wear when doing community activities)

Rule #6 Food Does Move Mountains Create a Parent Refreshment list and have 2 or 3 bring refreshments for each meeting – food brings members FBLA dinners – borrow foods classroom and prepare a spaghetti dinner as a team FBLA Drawings on Friday FBLA the Halls Holiday Bake-Off – vote on holiday treats and integrate data into an Excel lesson

Rule #7 Laugh, Play, Have FUN! Social functions allow you to enjoy your students in a non-traditional environment Prove that “granny” style bowling is effective Bust a move on the dance floor at competition Share a funny bed-time story at bed check Participate in spirit week showing your school pride

Rule #8 High Expectations are Established and Clearly Understood Student/Parent contract Have administrator speak to team before traveling to competition Students classroom behavior gives you leverage to perks No nonsense/negotiations accepted Call parents prior to competitions No excuses – students must take responsibility for their actions Communicate, communicate, communicate

Rule #9 Say your Thank You’s! Always send a thank you note/card to guest speakers, event coordinators, judges, etc. Carry thanks you cards with you Have each student write a small note in the card and sign it A two-minute note goes a long way Good manners opens many doors

Rule #10 Being Active Raises Interest and Recruits Members Senior dinner/cords Induction ceremony Semester socials Spring barbeque Homecoming banner contest Host a leadership conference End-of-the-year award ceremony with trophies FBLA breakfast Rest home visits Food Bank State Fair gate Cool field trips Exam Survival bags

Rule #11 Prepare for the Unexpected Pack needle, thread, bandages, extra slips, pantyhose, blazers, toothpaste, etc. when traveling Have ALL members cell phone numbers programmed in your phone and keep a parent phone list with you. Create more interest in and understanding of American business enterprise. Encourage members in the development of individual projects that contribute to the improvement of home, business, and community. Develop character, prepare for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism. Encourage and practice efficient money management. Encourage scholarship and promote school loyalty. Assist students in the establishment of occupational goals. Facilitate the transition from school to work.
