1-1 Ratios and Rates A ratio is a pair of numbers used to show a comparison between like or unlike quantities. Example: x y x : y x to y The numbers x and y are called terms.
Two ratios are equivalent ratios if their corresponding fractions are equivalent Ex: Find a ratio equivalent to 4/5 x2 =
Rate- a ratio that compares 2 quantities with different kinds of units. Unit Rate- when a rate is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1. Example: 160 beats 2 minutes 160 beats : 2 minutes 160 beats to 2 minutes
Some common unit rates: Miles per hour- average speed Miles per gallon- gas mileage Price per pound- unit price You turn a rate into a unit rate by simplifying the denominator to 1.
Ex 1: 160 beats: 2 minutes Write as a fraction 160 beats 2 minutes Divide numerator and denominator by 2 ÷2 Simplify 80 beats 1 minute
