HAIKUS!! Here are the characteristics: A focus on nature. A "season word" such as "snow" which tells the reader what time of year it is. A division somewhere in the poem, which focuses first on one thing, then on another. The relationship between these two parts is sometimes surprising. Instead of saying how a scene makes him or her feel, the poet shows the details that caused that emotion. If the sight of an empty winter sky made the poet feel lonely, describing that sky can give the same feeling to the reader.

Usually the images in catalog poems appeal to several of the 5 senses. Free Verse! This is where you have the room to be as creative as you want! Free verse poetry does not have to be about a certain topic or have a certain amount of lines or follow a set rhyme scheme. It can be about whatever you want, and you get to decide how long and whether or not it rhymes.

Let’s look at an Example: Voices screeching, fingers pointing A cruel world made for strangers. Blame is crushing, guilt is haunting A prison that no one escapes.
