Learning Experience #10 Outcomes of an Ally

Outcomes of an Ally Objectives Participants will review the three traditional outcomes associated with behavior management. Participants will be introduced to the five key areas that an Ally uses to help people thrive.

Traditional Thinking Has caused staff to… Control Coerce Fix Overpower Punish Restrain Hurt And even cause Death… http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/video/deadly-discipline-students-hurt-dying-restrained-17843767

Jonathan Carey Age 13 Died 2/15/2007 Restrained in a van, while staff were running errands. While in the bank parking lot, staff felt the need to subdue him when he tried to get out of his seat.

Angellika “Angie” Arndt Age 7 Died 5/07/2006 During one month, she was restrained 9 times for 1-2 hours at a time & put in timeout 18 times. The day after she was restrained for “gargling milk,”, she stopped breathing after being placed in a prone restraint position.

Candice Newmaker Age 10 Died 4/18/2000 During a 70-minute attachment therapy session to allegedly treat reactive attachment disorder. The treatment used that day included a rebirthing script, during which Candace was suffocated.

Gareth Myatt Age 15 Died 4/2004 Restrained by three members of staff after refusing to clean the sandwich toaster. He tried to tell them he couldn't breathe, but they did not release him. As they held him down, Gareth asphyxiated.

Kevin Colindres Age 18 Died 1/05/2007 Restrained by police when they responded to a family disturbance in their home. When Kevin moved from the couch, police put him in a prone restraint and he stopped breathing.

Joey (Giovanni) Alteriz Age 16 Died 2/04/2006 Cause of death was asphyxia due to prone, face-down restraint because he wanted to wear his hooded sweatshirt.

Corey Foster Age 16 Died 4/18/2012 Four staff members restrained Corey when he refused to leave the basketball court at his school.

Charlie McGillivary Age 46 Died 8/01/2011 When Charlie, a non-verbal man, was taking a walk he was tackled and arrested by police, because he wouldn’t respond to them when asked.

Cedric Napolean Age 14 Died 3/11/2002 A special-education teacher laid on top of Cedric, using a "therapeutic floor hold" to keep him from struggling during a disagreement over lunch.

Robert Saylor Age 26 Died 1/13/2013 Asphyxiated after being restrained and hand cuffed by police officers when he refused to leave a movie theater.

While these cases are Extreme… 3 Roles still exist from traditional plans Developmental Disabilities Cop Compliance Agent The Enforcer

Developmental Disabilities Cop Gives orders & directions Don’t touch! Stay quiet! Get back here now! You can’t touch that! Points & shakes finger Listens for what is wrong

Compliance Agent Expects compliance Uses threats & consequences You need to! I told you – NOW! Hurry up! Lunch is over at noon! Fold that neatly with 3 folds! Uses threats & consequences Listens for challenging words or non-compliance

Enforcer Uses force to make things happen Grabs arm or hands! Uses hands or body to enforce rules! Hands are forceful! Does not listen, only focused on physical control

What roles can you identify? Who played the DD Cop? Who played the Compliance Agent? Who played the Enforcer?
