Grids for Kids – January 2008 Do you know this person? NO? Then don’t give out any personal information about yourself. THINK: secret identity!

Grids for Kids – January 2008 Use a nickname! Nicknames Choose a nickname that is ambiguous, fun, fictional, boy, girl, whatever… You can be anyone you want to be, but don’t pass yourself off as someone else. When can I use my real name? For friends, family and by those that you have met in real life.

Grids for Kids – January 2008 What about s? If you don’t know who it’s from, don't open it. Delete it! Same with attachments. Delete it! Same with electronic greeting cards. Delete it! Remember: Don’t give out your personal information to people you don’t know in real life. Run anti-virus, and spam filtering. Don’t know how? Ask your teacher or parent. Have a working Firewall protecting your computer. 11

Grids for Kids – January 2008 Other things to remember…

Grids for Kids – January 2008 It’s OK to tell someone what city or county you live in, as long as you don’t include anything else. Switch off webcams: images can be falsified. Never send a picture to anyone you don’t know in the real world If anyone ever asks for information about you, tell a trusted adult straight away. Other things to remember…

Grids for Kids – January 2008 What about passwords? Passwords need to be strong! Hackers can crack your password using dictionaries in any language or theme. ilovetomcruise felix disneyland tomatosauce chipmunks happybirthday

Grids for Kids – January 2008 Passwords You need a new password for each login. HOW DO YOU REMEMBER THEM ALL?!?!?!?!? EASY!!! 1.Think of a subject 2.Think of a short sentence based around that subject 3. Take some consonants from the sentence (the second letters of each word, the last letters in each word) e.g. Book: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone - Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone = rPs 4. Add your favourite number(s) (NOT your age or date of birth) e.g. rPs05 5.Add something from the site: maybe the first few letters of the site or your favourite thing on the site e.g. GridClub.com becomes: rPs05Gri 6.Add some symbols to make it stronger {rPs05Gri} How am I going to remember all my passwords?

Grids for Kids – January 2008 If you haven’t met someone in real life it is best to keep these friendships online only. People online may be nice and trustworthy, but then again they may not be. Remember

Grids for Kids – January 2008 Make sure you look out for your friends and remind them to be careful. Pass the word! Tell your friends: don’t put too much personal info in their blog or on the web, and never arrange to meet with strangers you've been chatting to online. If anyone asks you to meet them in person, tell a trusted adult straight away. Have fun, Be safe.

Grids for Kids – January 2008 Have fun, Be safe.
