ERIK ERIKSON A NEO-FREUDIAN
Presentation transcript:

 Erikson felt that the need for social approval was very important.  Studied psychosocial development- An individual’s goal is to satisfy social needs.  Development is a lifelong interactive process between people.

 During the stages of life, Erikson believed that a person may develop more strongly in one way or another depending on how people respond to his or her efforts.

 A 2 year old is delighted with his newfound ability to walk and his new abilities to use words and ask questions.  The fact that he has acquired these abilities adds to his self-esteem, and he is eager to use them.  The adults around him applaud his efforts, he begins to develop autonomy or independence.  But if the adults around him ignore his efforts, the child may begin to doubt his efforts.

 Trust vs. Mistrust  Ages: Early infancy  Question: Is my world predictable and supportive?

 Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt  Ages: 1-3 years  Question: Can I do things myself or must I rely on others?

 Initiative vs. Guilt  Ages: 3-6 years  Question: Am I good or bad?

 Industry vs. Inferiority  Ages: 6-12  Question: Am I successful or worthless?

 Identity vs. Role Confusion  Ages: Early teens  Question: Who am I?

 Intimacy vs. Isolation  Ages: Young adult  Question: Shall I share my life with someone or live alone?

 Generativity vs. Stagnation  Ages: Middle Adult  Question: Will I be successful in life?

 Integrity vs. Despair  Ages: Older Adult  Question: Have I lived a full life?

 Jason is in middle school and he is afraid to show his new nose ring.  Granny is making cookies for her wonderful grandkids. These children are very polite cause she did a great job raising their father.  Kathy is upset that despite going on several dates, Charles is not “the one”.  Theresa has to go to the bathroom. She does not make it in time, so she goes and hides under her bed.

 Reflect on your life and look forward to the future!  Which path did you take in each stage?  Which path do you want to take in future stages?

 The class will be divided into eight groups.  Each group will be assigned a specific Erikson stage.  The goal of the class is to work together in order to develop one character and to create a comic book based on this character’s life.  Each group will be responsible for detailing the conflict and outcome in their assigned stage in comic book fashion (at least 5 pages).  The class must work with each other to ensure that similar conflicts do not occur in different stages and that there is a balance of outcomes. Remember that outcomes in previous stages will impact later stages.  In conclusion the class will compile each group’s task in order to produce a finished comic book.  Grading: Class Effort-Individual Effort- Physical Comic Book Presentation- Story (conflict/outcome)  Worth 60 points
