Protests and Impacts THE NEW DEAL HOW DID THE NEW DEAL AFFECT THE NATION?

Left Wing  Liberal (more government intervention)  The New Deal had not done enough. It should give more aid to the needy.  Radical View: The government should seize factories, and unused land. Jobs should be given to unemployed. Right Wing  Conservative (less government intervention)  New Deal has gone too far in expanding the role of the federal government. Tax $$ being wasted  The New Deal is Socialist and unconstitutional. CRITICS ATTACK THE NEW DEAL

 1934: Asked Americans in a fireside chat, “the plain facts of your individual situations. Are you better off than you were last year?”  People answer a resounding “YES” by electing a large number of Democrats in both the House and the Senate. FDR’S RESPONSE

 Strike down the National Industrial Recovery Act.  Ruled that it violated the separation of powers by giving the President power to regulate business rather than Congress.  Strike down the Agricultural Adjustment Act.  Regulating Agricultural production IS NOT the federal government’s job. SUPREME COURT ATTACKS THE NEW DEAL

 There were different reactions to FDR’s New Deal. What is one way that right wing and left wing attitudes towards the New Deal were different?  FDR responded to his critics and was supported by the American people. Explain one way that Americans showed support for the New Deal programs enacted by FDR. TURN & TALK

 Labor movement  Strengthened  power grew  Wagner Act: guaranteed the right of workers to form unions and to bargain collectively.  Automobile, rubber, and steel industries organized unions.  Union membership doubled from 14% 28% in 1940 OVERALL IMPACT ON WORKERS

 FDR influenced by Eleanor Roosevelt.  She encouraged him to place more women in government positions.  Women pressured to leave workforce to open up jobs for men with families to support.  Labor unions often supported the exclusion of women from the workforce. A MIXED DEAL FOR WOMEN

 Competition for jobs  Discrimination in hiring practices  Unemployment rates much higher for African Americans than whites  New Deal agencies practiced segregation.  Educated African Americans able to get some government jobs. DISAPPOINTING DEAL FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

 Jobs dries up in the Southwest where most Mexican Americans lived.  Experienced similar racial discrimination in hiring practices  The AAA pays farmers to cut back on planting. Mexican farm laborers lose their jobs.  Mexican laborers who were not citizens could not enroll for New Deal work relief.  1/3 return to Mexico A TOUGH DEAL FOR MEXICAN AMERICANS
