ECE 445: Senior Design Getting Parts

Outline Senior Design Lab –Parts of past projects ECE Electronics Service Shop ( 265 Everitt Lab ) –Catalog of parts for use in ECE labs ECE Storeroom ( 60 Everitt Lab ) –Catalog of parts for sale –Place orders through my.ece On your own… –Samples from manufacturers –“Textbook” Fund

Senior Design Lab 246 Everitt Lab

ECE Senior Design Lab Located in 246 Everitt Lab Parts from previous projects –Wireless transceivers: Xbee, Bluetooth, etc. –Motors and motor controllers –GPS receivers –Sensors: ultrasonic, IR, etc. –Development kits Microcontrollers DSPs FPGAs Parts must be signed out by a TA Parts must be returned at the end of the semester

ECE Electronics Service Shop 265 Everitt Lab

ECE Shop Located in 265 Everitt Lab Large inventory of discrete parts –Passives: resistors, capacitors, inductors –Transistors –Digital Logic: 7400 series parts, line drivers, etc. –Analog ICs: op-amps, oscillators, etc. –Power: Voltage Regulators –Electromechanical: switches, buttons, connectors Parts from the ECE shop are free (within reason) to use in your senior design project.

ECE Shop Parts Inventory Large inventory of discrete parts, list of parts on website:

ECE Shop Parts Inventory

Parts Request Form MUST be filled out when parts are taken from the ECE shop

ECE Storeroom 60 Everitt Lab

ECE Storeroom Located in 60 Everitt Lab A catalog of commonly used parts and items are kept in stock, list of stock parts is available on the website – –Inventory includes hand tools, project enclosures, mechanical hardware, soldering supplies, and cables Parts can also be ordered from anywhere through the my.ECE website

Ordering Through my.ECE Ordering parts using the ≈$40 available for groups from the department. A greater dollar amount may be approved if the item is understood to be course property. Ordering process –Discuss with your TA that you want to submit a request –Sign in to my.ece (link).Sign in to my.ece (link). –Near the bottom of your main page, find the “My Classes” frame. –In the table, find ECE 445. –In this frame, click “Order parts”. –Fill out the presented form, then hit Submit. –Notify your TA that you have submitted a request –Once approved, your request may be bundled with other orders by the ECE Store. –Once parts arrive, you will receive a message from the ECE Store.

Packages To Avoid Many parts come in multiple packages, make sure you are ordering the correct one Avoid BGA, CSP, WSP, DFN, QFN, TQFP, TSSOP, SSOP Packages Avoid packages with bottom side thermal pads If you absolutely need a part that comes in one of these packages, consult your TA or the ECE Shop about soldering the part Breakout boards are available for some hard to work with parts –Check sparkfun.com for breakout boards

On Your Own

Most manufacturers will provide free samples of parts and encourage students to use their free sample service for class projects –Some have limits: Analog Devices 2 parts only –Samples can usually be requested easily through the manufacturers website The course “textbook” –If you exceed your budget or for some other reason can’t get what you need, buy it on your own
