Health and Safety Executive Health and Safety Executive An update on health and safety for work experience placements - revised HSE guidance Kate Haire Strategic Interventions Division SBTAF – 1 st May 2013

Work experience – revised HSE guidance Background Part of larger project to revise much of HSE’s existing guidance – as recommended by the Löfstedt report (November 2011) Perceptions – a complex, bureaucratic process: more trouble than it’s worth ? The Wolf Report

Work experience – revised HSE guidance Revised guidance - aims Should be shorter and more straightforward Should only cover health and safety Who’s it for ? Placement providers (employers), organisers (schools/colleges/EBPs), parents and students

Work experience – revised HSE guidance Underpinning philosophy The placement provider (employer) is best placed to manage the risks… …so schools/colleges should not ‘second guess’ that process Schools’ and colleges’ past (including pooled) experience with that employer should act as a guide No automatic need for repeat assessments for each new student at a workplace

Work experience – revised HSE guidance Guidance is structured according to the responsibilities of those involved: Employer (placement provider) responsibilities Organisers – do’s and don’ts Parents & Students – guidance about expectations

Work experience – revised HSE guidance Additional information Guidance part of wider suite of young worker guidance, complemented by FAQs DfE, education sector bodies and SBTAF Board have been consulted Insurance – students are covered by ELCI policies

Work experience – revised HSE guidance The future More students on good-quality work placements Less bureaucracy Still tied up in paper ? Let us know – the role of the Mythbusters Challenge Panel [
