Bologna Process at RUG Implementation Ba/Ma, Quality Assurance & Diploma Supplement Regine van Groningen Academic Affairs & International Relations

Implementation Bachelor / Master RUG - Bologna declaration - European Higher Education Area - goal: to facilitate and increase student mobility - goal: transparency of higher education and of grades obtained

Bachelor-Master structure at RUG - 2 cycle system (implemented in 2002 and 2003)  en  -studies  -studies Bachelor Master 180 ECTS 60 ECTS 120 ECTS 180 ECTS medical studies

Bachelor - Master, contents Bachelor: focus on student - academic training, general competence - broaden interest in field of study - preparation for master studies Master: focus on expertise - specialisation (professional or scientific) - specialised competence

Bachelor, contents 180 ECTS - major - field of study - academic training - e.g. specialisation 30 ECTS free minor 150 ECTS academic training - knowledge - academic training Year 3 Year 2 Year 1

Advantages of this Bachelor model - visible academic training (HBO - WO) - freedom of choice for student + exchange - creation of multidisciplinary study tracks *reduced number of new studies *increased flow bachelor -> master - mono-disciplinary tracks might be interesting as a minor (not as major)

Internal Quality Assurance Current situation - no fully implemented structure for quality assurance at faculty level - just data collection - no follow-up of results - a lot of “ad hoc” work prior to visitation

Internal Quality Assurance Near future - one protocol on qualifications, obligations, and actions towards quality assurance - a fully implemented structure for quality assurance - all information will be directly available for visitation procedure

Diploma Supplement Why? - improves transparency in higher education - provides an honest judgement on the qualification obtained - increases mobility, facilitates access to labour market & stimulates lifelong learning NL: implementation as from 1 January 2005

Diploma Supplement at RUG Current situation & developments - students receive diploma in English & Dutch - students do not automatically receive full transcript of records - RUG computing centre received order to develop system for production of DS - faculties have been asked to translate all necessary information into English

Diploma Supplement at RUG Near future - DS, like diploma, will be produced at central level (student administration) - DS will be produced in English - DS will be provided automatically and free of charge to every student at the end of Bachelor and/or Masters programme
