They will demonstrate their mastery of the subject by completing presentations, listening to lectures, and taking a quiz at the end of the lesson. Sunshine State Standards World History: Grades 9-12 SS.912.W.7.6: Analyze the restriction of individual rights and the use of mass terror against populations in the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and occupied territories. SS.912.W.7.7: Trace the causes and key events related to World War II. SS.912.W.7.8: Explain the causes, events, effects of the Holocaust ( ) including its roots in long tradition of Anti-Semitism, 19 th century ideas about race and tradition and Nazi dehumanization of the Jews and other victims. ASSURE Model Analyze your learners: 9-12 Grade World History Students State your objectives: Students will learn about the causes and effects of WWII through various lesson plans Supplies and Materials: Students will need a KWHL chart, Night by Elie Wiesel, Computer access in class, crayons, and blank map of Europe in addition to pen and paper. Utilize media and materials: students will use materials to complete assignments Require Learner Participation: Students will complete group assignments to contribute to overall learning of class topic. Learning Objectives Monday Bellwork: Given a blank KWHL chart, students will complete three sections of the chart: What they already know, what they want to know, and how they plan to learn. Lecture: Presented with a PowerPoint Show on World War II, Students will be able to identify main events and outcomes of WWII. Group Assignment: Students will be broken up into groups of 5 and given a topic in regards to World War II. The rubric will be discussed and then they will have time in class to discuss the assignment within their groups. This project will help students to understand the causes and key events in relation to WWII. Tuesday Bellwork: Students will write down this week’s 10 vocabulary words that correspond to the WWII Unit. Using notes and future lessons, they will be able to define the words. Group Work: Students will break into their small groups to begin working on their animated timelines and PowerPoint presentations. Night: students will read along as the audio version plays. Listening to this book on tape will help students explain the causes, effects, and events of the Holocaust including its root in a long tradition of Anti-Semitism by the Nazis. Wednesday Bellwork: Students will be given a blank map of WWII Europe. Using their computers, students will research which countries aligned with each power (Allied and Axis Powers) or remained neutral. They will shade the maps according to the following criteria: Blue for Allied, Red for Axis, and Green for neutral. After completing this, students will be able to correctly identify each country’s position during the war. Video: Students will watch two YouTube videos that relate to the Holocaust and WWII. Holocaust Discussion: Following the films, a class discussion on the Holocaust will begin. Students will be able to analyze the restriction of individual rights and the use of mass terror in Nazi controlled Europe. Group Work Continued Thursday Bellwork: Students will look at a chart of Important Figures during WWII. After doing so, students will be able to identify with 100% accuracy who each leader is. Final Group Preparations: Students will finalize their presentations for the following day. Classroom discussion of Night: For a better understanding of the Holocaust, students will discuss their impressions of the Holocaust and how they would handle themselves in a similar situation. They will be asked why they think this happened and if it could happen again. Sudan and Rwanda will be discussed as possible Holocausts. Friday Group Presentations: While groups are presenting, those who are not will be taking notes on each subject being taught. 6 minutes are given per presentation. Short quiz: Students will take a quiz to demonstrate their 100% mastery of the WWII Unit. Materials: Monday: A blank KWHL chart and paper for recording notes. Tuesday: Laptops for compiling research on group projects. Audio version of Night. Wednesday: Crayons and laptop. Thursday: Leaders Chart and laptops. Friday: Presentations (PowerPoint Slides) pen and paper for quiz. Bloom’s Taxonomy Level: In this Unit, students will become more efficient in knowledge, comprehension, and analysis.
