THESIS From the time we are born, we are conditioned to behave in ways that are consistent with the values and expectations of others; when one doesn’t conform, they are likely to suffer criticism and ostracization.

 Into the Wild Chris felt pressure from his parents to live a life that didn’t align with his values  Many young people feel the same pressure from their families School/grades Athletics College Career choices

 Brave New World Bernard was an outcast because he didn’t participate in normal social activities (taking soma, playing obstacle golf, casual sex) The tension between doing what he felt was right and feeling a sense of belonging eventually tore him apart until he made the decision to behave like everyone else  Peer pressure is a type of conformity  Teens feel the need to belong to a group and fear what others think of them

“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation…” “The mockery made him feel an outsider; and feeling an outsider he behaved like one, which increased the prejudice against him…”

 Ideas about success and are predetermined  Media is the primary source TV Music Social Media Advertising

 Even companies and groups that appear to advance a positive message of individualism and acceptance are still part of the “system”.
