© Internatioal Baccalaureate Organization 2007 How and where does ATOD education take place?  Within the science and homeroom lessons specific content is covered at set points through the grade levels (for example “effects of ATOD on the body systems” is content taught in science during grade 7)  Through all subjects through development of the areas of interaction as ‘contexts for learning’  Specific events during the school year  Individual health assessments and guidance interviews

Science Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 Diploma biology Major ATOD and sexual health topics occur in alternating grades Additionally a minor ATOD topic is covered in grade 8 The diploma biology course covers many issues relating to ATOD (optional course) Sexual health ATOD

Homeroom lessons  Every year of the program between grades 6-10 issues and topics related to ATOD are covered, for example basic techniques for resisting peer pressure and saying “no” to drugs is dealt with in grade 7 Grade 6 Grade 7 Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 ATOD

© Internatioal Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Through the areas of interaction  The areas of interaction are the contexts through which subject content must be framed.  All subjects are required to frame content and relate it to the real world using the areas of interaction and this includes, most pertinently for this discussion, the health and social perspective.

© Internatioal Baccalaureate Organization 2007 The scope and sequence for health and social education  The skills and understanding that are expected to be developed in our students are mapped for the grade 6-10  All subjects are considering their content through this area of interaction, and are building these mental skills and attitudes even though they may not be directly discussing an ATOD topic (this is what we mean by having an integrated curriculum)

© Internatioal Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Specific events during the school year  There is an annual week each school year in which ATOD issues are addressed the following are typical activities that have occurred: Guest speakers Student presentations Parents evenings Student reflection on health issues

© Internatioal Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Individual health assessment and guidance  Every student meets with both the counselor and school nurse every year of the program to discuss health issues, support, and any concerns they (or that the counselor and nurse) might have. This is probably the most significant and individually targeted aspect of the ATOD program
