High School Schedules Creating opportunities and meeting standards

What has taken place so far? 1. A committee made up of teachers, principals, parents, students and district staff studied various schedules last school year ( ) 2. Information meetings were held at Eagle, Meridian, Centennial, and Mountain View last spring 3. A recommendation to keep the A/B block at Mountain View and Meridian and to continue to study bell schedule options at Eagle High, Centennial High, and Rocky Mountain was approved by the Board of Trustees last spring 4. The committee has continued meeting this school year

What has to happen next? Rocky Mountain High will open fall 2008 The committee must recommend a bell schedule for the opening of Rocky Mountain.

Why consider alternatives to the current high school schedules? Increased graduation requirements limit opportunities to take electives Multiple schedules exclude many students from shared programs or students accessing programs available at other high schools

What schedules has the committee studied? 6 period day (currently in use at EHS and CHS), allows 48 credits in four years Hybrid Schedule (combination of 60 minute and 90 minute class periods), allows 56 credits in four years A/B Block (currently in use at MVHS and MHS), allows 64 credits in four years Trimester 7 Period Day Various other blocks (4 by 4; rollover, etc)

The new graduation requirements are in place for: All students in the 10 th grade in the school year and younger Two years of Science and three years of Math (currently 2 years of science and 2 years of math) All students in the 9 th grade in the school year and younger Three years of science and three years of math An additional 2 credits (one year) of Math will be required for all students in the 8 th grade in the school year and younger Three years of Science and four years of math (pending board approval)

Graduation Requirements Graduation Requirements for Class of 2011 (9 th graders) attending a traditional schedule (CHS and EHS) Required electives include world languages, social studies, and music More than 95% of students take a class to earn the technology credit Students with an ISAT score below 221 must take reading Some students have to take additional intervention classes in math and language arts based on their ISAT scores
