My World and I Social Studies Lesson 1 st Grade Project Created by: Ms. Castaneda 1 st Grade

Essential Questions Where do you live in the world?

Unit Questions What is your home a part of? What is your neighborhood a part of? What is your city a part of? What is your county a part of? What is your state a part of? What is the United States of America a part of? How many continents are there? How many oceans are there? What do all of these components make-up? What is your home a part of?

Procedures Teacher will show maps of students’ city to create a map book of where they live. Teacher will then demonstrate to students that: 1. A home is part of a neighborhood.

Procedures 2. A neighborhood is part of a city. 3. A city is part of a county. 4. A county is part of a state. 5. A state is part of a continent. 6. There are 7 continents 7. There are 4 oceans. 8. All of these components make up the world.

Procedures Students will then make a storyboard to answer their unit questions. Students will then go into the computer lab where teacher will instruct students how to: Create a PowerPoint Presentation Write a postcard to their parents about what they have learned.

Procedures Create a web page Use a map to identify the 7 continents and the 4 oceans. Students will then present their project to the class.

Socials Studies Standards 1 st Grade Social Studies 1.2 Students compare and contrast the absolute and relative locations of places and people and describe the physical and/ or human characteristics of places. 1. Locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the seven continents, and the four oceans. 2. Compare the information that can be derived from a three- dimensional model to the information that can be derived from a picture of the same location. 3. Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols.
