p1 RJM 17/6/05Teaching & Learning Report – June 05 Meeting © Dr Richard Mitchell 2005 School of Systems Engineering Report for School Meeting 22/06/05 Dr Richard Mitchell, Director of Teaching & Learning Thanks Developments This Year Teaching Review …. Changes to Part 1 … New Degrees Changes for Next Year Some University Initiatives Internal Thoughts

p2 RJM 17/6/05Teaching & Learning Report – June 05 Meeting © Dr Richard Mitchell 2005 Thank You Thanks to all for your hard work Thanks in particular to those involved with examinations – the External Examiners seemed happy! Thanks to Lucy, Glennys, Adri, et al, and to Kate of KTP for the party to finalists Thanks to Glennys and Helen, in particular, for their help to students

p3 RJM 17/6/05Teaching & Learning Report – June 05 Meeting © Dr Richard Mitchell 2005 Teaching Review Main results from this Reorganisation of material mainly in Part 1 Simplified set of fewer modules …. All coded SE1gi5 g = subject group (S C E T); i an identifying letter Some changes are needed for Part 2 (some Part 3) We hope this will improve retention/pass rates Beancount system … To inform decisions on allocating teaching & admin Anticipates University requirement for all Schools

p4 RJM 17/6/05Teaching & Learning Report – June 05 Meeting © Dr Richard Mitchell 2005 Degree Course Information New degrees will start next year Systems Engineering Robotics MSc Informatics The University has agreed that we can use some Mechanical Engineering modules A MSc in Systems Engineering, involving ME, has not been approved, but we may try again. There is a good increase in EE and Cyb firm acceptances, smaller in CS. Thanks to all helping at School Open/Visit days, in particular the admissions tutors.

p5 RJM 17/6/05Teaching & Learning Report – June 05 Meeting © Dr Richard Mitchell 2005 For Next Year University has reviewed PAR and Personal Tutoring System results not yet available, but possible changes More emphasis that PAR is students Personal Academic Record … student responsible for it Tutor-tutee meetings will not be so much of a tick box There is now a Staff Portal on to RISIS, so you can all access information on your tutees, get class lists, etc. The Universitys centralised timetabling system should be working … may be teething problems!

p6 RJM 17/6/05Teaching & Learning Report – June 05 Meeting © Dr Richard Mitchell 2005 School Plans Will continue development of School Web pages Will investigate best way of presenting current student information Will pursue School Intranet – having two parts Information Provider … simple web pages Information Sharer … so interested parties can share files / modify them, etc. I hope to enhance the pages on Teaching & Learning Teaching Review needs to continue, to address Part 3 / 4, the overlap on AI between CS and CY, the MSc provision.
