What do you do in a car accident?
1. REMAIN CALM! Do NOT Panic or become Irate!
2. Keep Safety First No serious injuries – move cars to side of road If can’t move car – remain seated/belted in vehicle. Turn on hazards, flares, safety cones, warning triangles if possible. Wait for help to arrive
3. Exchange Information License plate, Make/Model of car, Insurance information, etc.
4. Photograph scene/damages to cars & record witness info.
5. File a State Vehicle Accident Report A. Police will write up report if they come to the scene. B. May not come unless there are injuries. Do you know how File a report?
6. CALL YOUR INSURANCE CARRIER Know beforehand: Does your insurance cover towing, rental cars? Many policies do not – but you can add for only $1 - $2 extra/month. Who pays for damages? Minor accidents/minimal damage = you may agree to pay yourselves, not involve insurance companies. FYI…you may get bill – violator won’t pay. Then what? If you don’t report it – victim may claim injuries later, and you/your insurance may have to pay a settlement later. Your insurance company should know YOUR version.
WHAT SHOULD BE IN YOUR VEHICLE AT ALL TIMES? License, Registration, Insurance Card Pen and paper for note taking Cell phone Camera Flashlight Warning Device (Flares, triangle warning device) Card – stating medical conditions/medical allergies Emergency Contacts and phone numbers for law enforcement agencies.
