Areas of Planning Awareness: Know the symptoms Prevention –Individual –Department/unit High level of absences –Students –Faculty/staff Campus operates at ‘social distance’ Semester ends at 12 weeks
Know the symptoms Know H1N1 symptoms: –Fever (over 100 with cough, over 100 with sore throat). –Comes on quickly. Know emergency warning signs to seek immediate medical attention: –Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath –Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen –Sudden dizziness –Confusion –Severe or persistent vomiting –Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough (Resources CDC web site:
Prevention-Individuals Individuals –Develop your PIP (personal influenza plan) Assess your risk Determine where to recuperate until 24 hours after fever is gone. Contact information for self-isolation. Who can bring your groceries, medicine? –Get and use your own supplies (soap, hand sanitizer, tissues, thermometer) –Wash your hands; cover your sneezes and coughs –Bookmark flu.wisc.edu and check regularly Resources –What can you do about the flu? What can you do about the flu? –(
Prevention-Departments and Units Report absences with flu-like symptoms Obtain supplies: Hand sanitizer and wipes Wipe down items used by multiple individuals –Keyboards –Counters –Telephones –Laptops (don’t wipe the screen) Resource: Cleaning recommendations for households and individual roomsCleaning recommendations for households and individual rooms
Reporting absences-staff Employee calls in sick: –State if employee has flu-like symptoms they need to stay home until fever free for 24 hours –If employee reports symptoms Distribute “Information for Employees with Flu-like Symptoms”. (Attachment one) Distribute guidelines to supervisor (Attachment two) Report absence to Notify employees and students who came into contact with the absent employee within the prior 24 hours. (Attachment three)
Employee failure to ‘self-isolate’ Tell them to ‘go home’. Give them Attachment one. Require a physician’s statement to return before prescribed timeframe. Should take leave or leave without pay.
High level of employee absences Identify your essential personnel –On campus work Police, power plant, animal care, network staff Assign a back-up –Off campus work Work with MERIT for off campus access Waiver of Telecommuting Agreements Consider survey or trial day for work from home
High level of student absences Clarify how students should communicate with faculty and instructional staff in the event of absence. Students must be excused from classes and assignments. Do not require a medical excuse. Provide opportunities for students to make up class content, assignments, and exams. –Sharing of class notes –Posting of lecture notes, powerpoints –Use of online discussions –Timed exams in and Moodle –Limited proctoring at MERIT Library (contact Anna Lewis –Work with MERIT on other solutions
Campus operates at ‘social distance” Determined by Chancellor Only pre-identified ‘essential employees’ allowed in campus buildings. Essential classes continue to be taught –Provide low tech solutions. –Consider access of faculty, staff, and students to resources.
Semester ends at 12 weeks Chancellor has authority to declare. Grades must be available for students, mid-term plus final not a viable grading plan. Uncertain about incomplete and late grade policy.
Working together Have departments/units sent the HR Guidelines to all (including PA’s, TA’s, student staff)? What online resources do you need? –Documents on Moodle, VPN? –Do you want a shared space for SoE documents? –What face to face training is needed? What questions should I share with campus?
