1. TURN YOUR SIGNED SYLLABUS INTO YOUR CLASS’ BASKET. 2. GET OUT A SHEET OF PAPER FOR NOTES AND AN ACTIVITY What we’re doing today: 1. Learning about Accountable Talk 2. Practicing Accountable Talk

Accountable Talk Based on the name, what do you think accountable talk is? Raise your hand if you would like to be heard.

Talk that is accountable accountable [uh-koun-tuh-buh l] adjective 1. subject to the obligation to report, explain, or justify something; responsible; answerable. 2. capable of being explained; explicable; explainable.

Norms for Discussion You have the right to… Make a contribution to an attentive, responsive audience. Ask questions that clarify and advance your understanding. Be treated civilly. Have your ideas discussed. You are obligated to… Speak so that everyone can hear. Speak one at a time. Listen for understanding. Agree or disagree (and explain why) in response to other people’s ideas. Critique ideas, not people.

Sentence Stems I agree with you because… Where do you see that? How does that connect to? I have a different opinion. I also noticed…Do you agree? What did you mean when you said? What is your evidence? I disagree because… While you have a point… I have something to add.

Why are you here? On a sheet of, brainstorm as many reasons you can think of as to why the government requires you to go to school. Try to think of reasons that can be fully explained and supported. Be prepared to share your answer with others.

Why are you here? Turn to the back of your sheet of paper and make a main ideas chart. Write down what John Green says are the reasons we go to school (main idea) Write down his reasons supporting the main idea Main IdeaSupport

Why are you here? John Greene’s Video “An Open Letter to Students Returning to School” 2x. He talks VERY fast. Pay attention!!

Why are you here? We will now engage in a whole group discussion. First, let’s set some norms for whole group discussion in our class so we can make this a productive space for everyone: Be engaged Monitor air time and share your voice Challenge with respect We will use these norms for the entire semester.
