Graphing Functions* Functions are graphed on horizontal and vertical axes. The independent variable is the input of a function and is graphed on the horizontal axis or x-axis and is called the x-coordinate The dependent variable is the output of a function and is graphed on the vertical axis or y- axis and is called the y-coordinate. Ordered pairs are used to represent one input/output pair. The first number corresponds to the input and the horizontal axis. The second number corresponds to the output and the vertical axis.
