Panel Projects Contrasting Perspectives

Component Assignments of the Project Bibliography (due 2/4) Extensive, thorough Minimum of 10 current published articles (1993-present) Article critiques (due 2/25) Thoughtful, insightful, accurate 1 page typed Presentation preview (due 3/17) Contrasting perspectives Panel presentations (Apr 7-21) 1 hour presentations ppt slides/handouts Relevant websites

Contrasting Perspectives Critical review of literature to support EBP New methodologies that challenge traditional approaches Theoretical basis or support Evidence-based support Theory-based Cautionary steps Limitations related to study methodologies, sample size, etc. May be indicated for limited population

OMT Include (in addition to previous info): What are OMEs? How are they used? Who are they used with? What is the evidence-based practices of their effectiveness? What is the theoretical support for use of OMEs?

CAS Include (in addition to previous info): Does it exist or is it a severe expression of AI/PI? How do you differentially diagnose CAS from AI? From PI? What evidence supports the existence of CAS as a clinical entity? What are the clinical implications of the diagnosis of CAS?

Target Selection Factors Include (in addition to previous info): What do you treat? What is the theoretical basis for the different target selection criteria? What are the EBP for different target selection factors? What are lexical factors in selection of target words? What is the theoretical relevance, as well as the clinical implications, of lexical factors? Contrast traditional to phonological complexity approaches to target selection

Frameworks of Assessment Include (in addition to previous info): What aspects of communication do you assess? How do you assess? What is your sample (single- word vs conversational speech)? How do you analyze? What is the theoretical basis of the frameworks? Would you do different assessments based on type and severity of child’s speech? Contrast linear vs non-linear analyses; adult-based vs child-based analyses

Contrastive Intervention Approaches What are they? How do they differ? Which one should you choose? Does one approach fit all kids? What are the EBP for the contrastive approaches? What are theoretical bases for the different approaches? Contrast homonymous vs non-homonymous approaches

Conversation-Based Approaches What are they? How do they differ? What are the EBP for these approaches? What are the theoretical basis for these approaches? Should conversation-based approaches be used with all children with speech disorders? Contrast word-based vs conversation-based practices

Emergent Literacy What is it? What is encompassed by EL? What is the SLP’s role in assessment and treatment of EL skills? What are the EBP of EL intervention? What is a current model of EL acquisition? Contrast explicit vs implicit instruction; individual vs group; workbooks vs play-based activities

Resource Template Clinical Forum in LSHSS (1999) on contrasting perspectives regarding specific language intervention approaches

In sum … Based on your careful and thoughtful review of the current literature, what is the validity and limitations of the topic you researched?
