“Thomas Paine’s Common Sense” Mr. Foster CCMS Social Studies

I. Why do we have a government? A. Society: Everything that is constructive and good, which people come together to accomplish. B. Government: A people’s “construct” designed to protect their accomplishments and rights, and especially their lives, liberty, and property.

II. Why do we have kings? A. Ancient superstitious societies believed their leaders were in direct communication with or were chosen by their god. B. We are no longer members of a superstitious society. We are all equal in nature, we have equal rights, and thus we must have the equal opportunity to lead society. C. The people of a society should be able to elect their leaders from, “the best and brightest people within a society.”

III. Why should the colonies become Independent? American Society no longer needs British Protection, because we have the $, size (land), and leaders to be a great nation.
