LETS CHANGE THE NORMAL

Does everyone have a good idea of what normal is? Most everyone has, I think- so lets change it a little bit. But this word that we call normal is very hard to change if not impossible. But let's work on it. Sometimes it is easier to stick with normal – than to do something different which is not normal. The is where it gets tricky. To do what fits the situation sometimes means not doing the normal

We, as board members, have a very important job to accomplish

As Board Members we see lots of situations most of which are NORMAL But sometimes things don't go that way for some reason or another. So now we need to be ready to change our NORMAL approach. It might be that making a decision change look like a NORMAL one turns into one that is very controversial. So NORMAL can be good an at the same time it can be bad.

CHANGE THE NORMAL LIST

Each school board here today does a lot of NORMAL things it's when the NOT SO NORMAL come along,we get uncomfortable. Change the board meeting time- Evaluate the Supt. Every 3 months.

CHANGE OUR OWN COMFORT ZONE

Comfort zone is tuff to change -always be looking for ways to improve on your district comfort zone. One way is be a board member that responds rather than reacts.... IF YOU WANT SOMETHING THAT YOU NEVER HAD...THEN YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING YOU HAVE NEVER DONE.

CHANGE NEGATIVE THINGS TO POSITIVE

Change negative to postive has a broad range/ neg. is usually not NORMAL. Always look for postive in a really neg. situation.

NETWORK WITH OTHER DISTRICTS

Some times resourses can be traded … Sports Hold Workshops I learn a lot by listening to what works well in other districts that are the size of our district.

ATTEND MORE NMSBA CONFERENCES THAN MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Attend more conferences this is not NORMAL for a lot of boards....try to exceed the min. that the state say's we need. Some of my info. Has come from one of the sessions that I have attended. The more training a board member has could mean fewer complications he or she might have..

SERIOUS COMMITTMENT

Commitment....This takes a lot of effort on your part......Don't say let's all sacrifice and you don't. DO YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Then go do it!

AVOID ABUSE OF POWER

Board Members as a body at a meeting have this. But seperate they have ZERO. What's NORMAL here is to forget this when you are not in a meeting

TRUST AND GOOD COMMUNICATION ARE INSEPERABLE

Trust......make a great effort to see that this is normal. Good communication.....We all can change here. Show respect.....your community will often judge quality of your school by how you act as a board member.

EFFECTIVE BOARDMANSHIP

It's easy to sit back an not become the best board member that you could be....THIS IS KINDA NORMAL.... So if you kick it up a notch or too who knows what might happen.

ESTABLISH RELATIONSHIPS

You might have to change NORMAL here. Remember this is a TEAM effort. BOARD / SUPT.

?? STATUS QUO ??

Can mean a lot of things. From the way our school has done things for a lot of years. And we are not going to change now. NORMAL....A lot of district's struggle with this...I can talk about all the wrong things that are going in the wrong direction, but if I don't do something about it on my part as a board member. THEN WHAT HAPPENS????

KEEPING YOUR SUPERINTENDENT MULTIPLE YEARS

BIG CHANGE FROM NORMAL. You will find things work an run much smoother when you are not changing SUPERINTENDENTS constantly. I don't know about you, but I like this one.

TALK THE TALK WALK THE WALK

NORMAL here is usually TALK but NO WALK. If you are going to be a Board Member be one...Don't just talk like one. Rembember you might only have 4 years to help make a difference.

SHOW RESPECT

Be a Board Member that listen's an works to solve the problem....no matter what happens show respect.. Excuses can be NORMAL. Don't let that be a reason to change the problem.

COMMON SENSE IS NOT SO COMMON

COMMON SENSE ???? Where are we here in todays world. NORMAL I am not to sure sometimes. But good common sense will take you along ways. If you will take time to use it...

GETTING AN IDEA SHOULD BE LIKE SITTING DOWN ON A PIN “IT SHOULD MAKE YOU JUMP UP AND DO SOMETHING”

Be a Board Member that see's things in a way that would be beneficial to your district... Got a good IDEA don't keep it to yourself.

Many receive advice but only the wise profit from it.

NORMAL here is to receive some some good advice and not do anything with it. Take time to think it over...don't be to hasty to make a quick decision.

SMART IS WHEN YOU BELIEVE ONLY 'HALF' OF WHAT YOU HEAR. BRILLANT IS WHEN YOU KNOW WHICH 'HALF' IS WHICH!

This kinda speaks for it's self. We all get info. From time to time.We just have to decide which half is which. I know you have not thought about some of this SO NOW START THINKING ABOUT HOW YOU ARE GOING TO CHANGE NORMAL IN YOUR DISTRICT.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH I HOPE I HAVE SAID SOMETHING THAT WILL BE BENIFICIAL TO YOUR DISTRICT
