SADC Course in Statistics Sampling methods in practice Module I1, Sessions 06 and 07

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 2 Learning Objectives Explain the terminology used to describe NSS and other surveys Understand the concepts underlying different sampling methods Apply the sampling concepts to situations other than surveys.

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 3 Activities 1.This presentation – used throughout these 2 sessions 2.Resources on sampling Summarised in groups and described to the class 3.Applying the concepts To situations including surveys and other design exercises needing the same concepts

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 4 Review – where are we so far? To the woods Introduced the importance of stratification And random sampling The Paddy survey Introduced multistage surveys With different ways of sampling at each stage Including simple random and PPS sampling There is no best way to sample It all depends on the objectives Then we reviewed the common terms And considered how sampling helps attacking the curse of variation!

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 5 To the woods – a forest sampling game

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 6 The paddy game

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 7 Activity 2: Resources on sampling Students divide into groups and take one case study within each group. They prepare a short presentation on their case study, which is given to the whole class. In each case the emphasis is on the sampling and other practical issues that are prior to the data collection stage.

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 8 Activity 3: Applying the concepts A consultancy session is shown and discussed within the class. Then a series of further questions are posed, that are to be conducted by students playing the role of consultant and consultee. The scene is then to be delivered to the class.

To put your footer here go to View > Header and Footer 9 The objectives – can you now: Explain the terminology used to describe NSS and other surveys Understand the concepts underlying different sampling methods Apply the sampling concepts to situations other than surveys
