Presentation transcript:

Our Mission is to inspire and develop courageous leaders who think independently, work collaboratively, learn joyfully, and champion change. Our Passion is empowering each girl to live her potential.

We Believe … Empowering a girl changes the world; It is fundamental to understand and address issues of difference; An integrated, collaborative curriculum challenges and engages students; Middle school should be joyful, curiosity-filled, and safe and open to all voices.

Academic Vision Seattle Girls' School believes in developing every aspect of its students. That's why an integrated, project-based, active learning approach is the foundation of our academic curriculum across all grade levels. By providing an integrated education where the learning occurs across disciplines, SGS provides girls with the opportunity to develop the important skills and abilities required in today's dynamic and ever-changing world. Their future, not our past!

Core Curriculum Adventure and Wellness (Grades 5-8) Art (Grades 5-8) Humanities - Language Arts and Social Studies (Grades 5-8) Mathematics – Foundations for Algebra & Algebra (Grades 5-8) Music (Grades 5&6 and Rock Band) Science (Grades 5-8) Spanish (Grades 6-8)

Academic Vision + In addition to offering a rigorous academic curriculum presented by a passionate, dynamic faculty, SGS challenges its students to think critically and hone their leadership skills through public speaking, activism, and service opportunities at every grade level. Culminations “Being There” Experiences Collaboration Leadership Conflict Resolution Identity Development / Anti-Bias Learning Teams Metacognition – Thinking about our thinking.

Informed by standards …

But future oriented! SGS faculty are informed by Common Core Standards as well as the seven “survival skills” for the future defined by Tony Wagner of the Harvard Graduate School of Education: Critical thinking and problem-solving Collaboration and leadership Agility and adaptability Initiative and entrepreneurialism Effective oral and written communication Accessing and analyzing information Curiosity and imagination

Recognizing shifts that are already happening in education today A 21 st Century Imperative – A Guide to Becoming a School of the Future, NAIS Commission on Accreditation Knowing  Doing Teacher-centered  Student-centered The Individual  The Team Consumption of Info  Construction of Meaning Schools  Networks Single Sourcing  Crowd Sourcing (Wikipedia)

This We Believe: Keys to Educating Young Adolescents (Position Paper of National Middle School Association) Middle School needs to be … Challenging, exploratory, integrative, and relevant.

The Research on Resilience How do girls thrive? What protects them from cyber-bullying? Why are friendships with “unsuitable” girls a good thing? What about the latest brain research really matters? Are single-sex schools and classes good for girls? How can parents and educators work together?

Big Ideas A Curriculum that focuses on big ideas gives girls permission to dream big. Our curriculum defines rigorous learning as preparation for high school, future careers and citizenship.

Have a great tour!
