Why is food important?

Food is our body’s source for energy and structural materials.

Food is any substance that your body can use as raw material for growth, repair, and energy.

Most of the food you eat is water Most of the food you eat is water. Food is made up of three classes of nutrients: Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Most of the food you eat is water. But water does NOT give you energy. Food is made up of three classes of nutrients: Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

Food has calories. Calories measure the amount of energy in food.

A diet is the types of food that a person eats on a regular day A diet is the types of food that a person eats on a regular day. Your diet depends on your culture, your food preferences, and what kind of food that is available.

Go to pg. 332 What is the importance of calcium in your diet? Find the deficiency symptoms column. These are problems that your body can have if you are lacking these elements. What happens when you are lacking potassium in your body? What are the excess symptoms of chlorine?

Carbohydrates: Are used for energy. Breakdown: simple sugars Sources:

Proteins: Are used for muscle building , growth, and repair of cells. Breakdown: Amino Acids Sources:

Lipids (Fats): Are used for storing energy, controlling hormones, insulation, protection from injury. Breakdown: Fatty acids Sources:
