BACKGROUND Scrutiny Review of Renewables Support the establishment of a Borders Renewable Energy Agency Project guided by the Scottish Borders Sustainable Energy Association The Council is providing the resource to manage the project

Why BEA is needed Fill major gaps in related services A focal point for renewables Drive renewable energy, energy management and energy conservation Lead carbon reduction Encourage and develop community ownership of renewables Assist communities Develop local businesses Training and Education Local advice and information

The vision One stop shop for individuals, businesses and schools and community groups Local source of advice, information, education, training and support on all energy matters Promote renewable energy, energy conservation, carbon reduction, sustainability Develop and market the Scottish Borders as a green energy, low carbon area

How it would work As an independent organisation THE centre for renewable energy, energy and carbon reduction in the Borders Deliver specific core services, others through partners Act as an agency for other, particularly specialist, services Develop BEA as a brand to promote recognition Build strong community and partner relationships Shop window for related products and technologies

Electricity in the Borders Borders Electrical Consumption [1] [1] The last available full year record is for 2008 and shows a total Borders area consumption of 50.7 ktoe (oil equivalent) = 633,749, kWh and 633, MWh Borders Generating Output Installed wind generation capacity is MW Annual theoretical generation - 24x ,273, MWh Annual practical generation of 26% =1,111,090.50MWh This indicates that already almost twice the amount of electricity consumed is generated within the Scottish Borders area.
