Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Undulators and Wigglers for Future Linear Colliders Jim Clarke ASTeC Daresbury Laboratory 12th June 2002

Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Experience at Daresbury Many years in Insertion Devices ðOne of the first undulators ever built ðSuperconducting Wigglers ðHigh Field Permanent Magnet Wigglers ðPM Helical Undulators for Storage Rings and FELs ðMagnet Design and Assembly, Mechanical Engineering, Magnet Testing

Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Recent Projects 2.4 T Hybrid PM Wiggler for SRS Planar Helical Undulator for SRS & DIAMOND Helical Undulator for FEL

Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Polarised Positron Source We have recently agreed with TESLA that we will design the helical undulator for their polarised positron source This will be a ~100 m, short period device (~12 mm) which will use the 250 GeV electron beam to generate ~20 MeV circularly polarised photons.

Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Present TESLA Layout

Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Existing Design Superconducting Double Helix with Iron (Floettmann)

Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Project Plan Phase 1 (~ months) ðReview Basic Specification ðCompare Alternative Solutions ðAssess Engineering Feasibility ðMake Recommendations for Phase 2 Phase 2 (~ months) ðDetailed Magnetic and Engineering Design ðConstruct Prototype Phase 3 (~ months) ðDetailed Test and Measurement in Lab ðTests with Beam (?)

Insertion Devices and Magnets GroupJ A Clarke, Daresbury Laboratory Wigglers Damping Rings require many meters of high field wigglers (10s to 100s) We have designed some of the highest field strength permanent magnet wigglers in the world - much higher than is presently being considered by NLC These may provide a more cost effective solution
