House Bill 5  Allows greater flexibility through the Foundation High School Program (FHSP) with endorsements  Reduces EOC requirements: Algebra 1, Biology, US History, English 1 (Reading & Writing), & English 2 (Reading & Writing)

What happened to the old graduation plans?  Students currently in 9 th, 10 th, and 11th grade may graduate on the graduation plans now in place (RHSP, DAP) or may choose the FHSP.  Students entering high school is are required to be on the new Foundations plans.  The current plans will be phased out over time.

FHSP + Distinguished To earn the distinguished level of achievement, students must complete:  The FHSP  An endorsement  Algebra II

FHSP with Endorsements  With few exceptions, ALL students will be required to earn an endorsement in one of the following areas: 1. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) 2. Business and Industry 3. Public Services 4. Arts and Humanities 5. Multidisciplinary Studies

When Considering FHSP…  Think about the student’s chosen pathway Which science and math courses will be needed?  Think about which college/university the student plans to attend Which science and math courses are required for admission and/or chosen major  Endorsement details will be finalized by the end of the school year

District Graduation Policy  Students must complete all required coursework in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.  Students must also pass the Exit Level TAKS or STAAR requirements to receive a diploma.

 On-Level Classes – College Readiness  Pre-Ap/AP/Dual – College Credit Potential

 Rigorous  College Content – approved by College Board  Higher Grade Point Scale (5.0 vs. 6.0)  College Credit potential (verify through university website or College board)  AP Exams, May 2014  Payment plan options  $90 per test; a reduced price for Free/Reduced lunch  Student will register online early 2 nd semester

 More rigorous  Tests on specific subject area:  Current English, Science, Social Studies & Math  Minimum score each year required When:  Retakes are in December  Weeks of March 31 st & May 5

TESTING Exit Level TAKS Retests for seniors: The week of October 21 st ELA – 21 ST Math – 22 nd Science – 23 rd SS – 24 th

Semesters & Credits  Treat semesters like the end of the year  Semester average determines credit .5 credit per semester class  Semester average is on your permanent record  Semester Averaging – average of both semesters to determine final credit- (failing grade will still show on transcript)

GPA & Class Rank  GPA - Grade Point Average (Example: 3.62) Shows personal performance 4.0 and 5.0 scale shown on transcript 5.0 scale reflects Honors classes  Class Rank Shows comparison to other students based on GPA 9th grade is important  Example: Graduating Class of 2012 – 399  Top 10% - 1 – 39 - Top 20% - 1 – 79

 Must conference with the counselor to obtain an application- only courses beyond grad requirements may be taken Pass/Fail  Must submit the application with all appropriate signatures no later than one week after receiving the report for the 9 week marking period.  You cannot ask for the grade once this has been applied for and accepted  You will receive grades on progress reports and report cards for eligibility purposes  Will receive a P (Pass) or F (Fail) for the semester grade on transcripts

TESTING REASONS TO TAKE PSAT  College readiness preparation  Experience gained for entrance exam, SAT  Opportunity for scholarships  Juniors may qualify for National Merit program announced in September 2012  District pays for all 10 th graders.  The cost for juniors is $  The date of the test is Wednesday, October 16.  Juniors register online at by Sept 27th

JUNIOR COLLEGE ENTRANCE These are placement tests which may be used by TX Community Colleges and Junior Colleges in lieu of SAT/ACT  TSI  TAKS (English & Math)

Top Ten Percent Bill  Students ranking in the top 10% of their class are automatically admitted to any public university in Texas ( UT’s cap is 7%)  Complete application requirements by the university’s deadline  Enroll in college no more than two years after graduating from high school

College Admission Terms  Early Decision – A binding commitment to attend the college if you are accepted.  Early Action/Notification – Simply applying early so you will receive acceptance notification early – no commitment to attend.  Rolling Admission – Apply and usually receive an admission decision within four to six weeks

Off to college…where to go?  Generally recommended that students apply to 3 – 5 colleges.  Select a “dream” (reach) school that may be a stretch.  Select at least one ( safe) “sure thing”.  Select 2 – 3 schools in between.  A college should fit the student academically, personally, and socially. Be realistic! Ideally, have all applications completed by Thanksgiving

Online Career Exploration Program  Students will:  participate in easy interests and skills inventories  choose their career cluster  create and update their own portfolio  explore over 900 career profiles  parents and students get access to information about more than 7,000 colleges and technical schools  build graduation plans aligned with their career clusters  build resumes, practice job search and interviewing skills, and do much more…
