Draft HPS Run Plan March 30,

Next Steps Beamline Setup Trigger Commissioning Beam Stability Studies SVT Commissioning Data Taking Checking the Data Not a linear progression! Some steps start before others are finished. Others can’t start until prerequisites are completed. Return to sequence at the end. Homework required in different areas. 2

Beamline Setup Set Up Beam to Alcove * Good scans on upstream harps, good halo rates, upstream BPMs calibrated * 4mm SVT Collimator in; SVT fully retracted * Bring centered beam to dump. Good spot on screen at x=+5mm; y=-5mm * Good scans on 2H02, low halo rates * Downstream BPMs calibrated. Beware excessive motions during calibration * Turn Chicane on * SVT Wire Scan. Move beam to desired spot x,y with upstream movers. * Record BPMs and Magnets and Harp Scans * Establish Orbit Locks * Mike/Arne provide operator procedure Need BPM calibration, Beam Set-Up Procedures, and Orbit Locks from MCC SVT Wire Scan Gui Working 3

Trigger Studies Conditions: Can proceed if good beams are established to Hall B dump and beams are stable. Can proceed before bpms are calibrated and orbit locks are on, if beams are good and calibration is delayed. With Trigger Expert on shift, take ALLTrig data for 1hr at 50 nA Analyze data. Trigger OK? Rates? Report at 3 o’clock meeting. When to take individual runs? Need Trigger commissioning plan on wiki Online trigger diagnostics ready Offline trigger analysis ready Expected trigger rates/nA beam for each trigger type Define Experiment Trigger (i.e. what mix of various triggers and prescales) 4

Beam Stability Studies Conditions: Need bpms calibrated and orbit locks on. Confirm diagnostics ready and data being recorded. Need bpm diagnostics available to look for beam motion at 2H02 With Expert, run beam stability studies at 2H02 harp on 1mm wire * 4 hours running on top wire * 4 hours running on bottom wire Can this running be used for trigger studies with individual triggers? Need Wire or collimator? Review and refine procedures. Find someone to do BPM stability study 5

SVT Commissioning Studies in Out position with SVT expert. Could get started before full stability studies with an attempt to time in with SVT in out position 1)Time in at <10nA on 4 um target (assumes 2.2 GeV) 2)Take sample data and begin offline analysis Conditions for moving SVT in: 1) Need beam stability studies to confirm no fast beam motion in trip 2) Need orbit locks on 3) Need beam trip diagnostics and procedures. Proceed with SVT commissioning plan with SVT expert should on hand. SVT commissioning ends with data runs at several “in” positions—to be decided as we see what backgrounds and performance are like. Need SVT procedures for recovery from beam trip MCC procedures for recovery from beam trip BPM display to show beam position ok 6

Data Taking Take data in final SVT commissioning steps * Use 3 mm collimator * Start fully protected Si (1.5 mm from beams) * Use run trigger Check occupancies and trigger rates with full system * Get more experience with beam trips * Ramp up current Safe to move in? * Check beam trips history? Any beam motion? * Handle occupancy and rates? * Feeling lucky? Keep Runlog and start DQM 7

Check Data Is the experiment working? * see tridents at the expected rates, with the expected mass distribution * detector performance OK? * list of good runs Need Help from the Analysis Group Trident analyses developed Ecal performance checks SVT performance checks Beamline performance checks 8

Sequence 1. Beams * Good beams to tagger, then alcove * If people are available, do bpm calibration and orbit locks Do this as soon as people are available * If people not available, set up chicane and target studies and then Essential Trigger studies Time in SVT in out position 2. When have bpms calibrated and orbit locks on * If necessary, complete trigger studies and SVT timing * Get MCC procedures for setup * Do Beam Stability Studies 3. When have beam stability studies and SVT diagnostics available * proceed with SVT commissioning 4. Take data. Follow SVT Commissioning Plan. 9
