Introduction Hello my 8 th grade exit project is about the 1900s. There are very interesting events and facts that you are about to hear. You will hear about deaths and inventions. You will also hear about great people being born and a little bit about New York City. So sit back and enjoy.

1900~King Umberto Assassinated Born in Turin Italy on March 14, He always said “Remember to be a king all you need to know is how to sign your name, read a newspaper, and mount a horse.” King Umberto

1900~Continued Married twice. He had one child named Victor Emmanuel III. King Umberto was only king for 22 years and 201 days. Gaetoo Bresci shot king Umberto 3 times and took his life.

1901~Queen Victoria the first dies. Her full name was Alexandria Victoria. She was named after Godfather. Grew up without a father and no siblings. She was Queen of Great Britain and Ireland. Queen Victoria 1 st

1902~1 st Teddy Bear Theodore Roosevelt found a lean black bear tied to a tree on one of his hunting trips. He refused to shoot the bear because he thought it was poor sportsmanship. Theodore’s nickname was teddy, that’s where they got the name teddy bear November 14 has been designated American Teddy Bear Day

1902~Continued Morris Mictom owned a toy shop and heard about Theodore's decision not to shoot the bear and decided to make a stuffed teddy bear. He went to Theodore and asked if he could use the name teddy bear. Theodore allowed it. Millions of teddy bears were sold in the first year.

1903~ Alois Hitler dies He was born in Stones, Australia in He had 3 wives. His first wife died of unknown circumstances. His second wife died of tuberculosis. He had 2 children with his second wife. He also had 5 children with his third wife and in those 5 kids was Adolf Hitler.

1903~Continued Alois was a very heavy drinker. He spent most of his time in the local tavern. He was 65 years old when he died and most likely died of pleural hemorrhage

1904~New York subways open It opened at 2:35 pm on October 27, When it first opened it went from lower Manhattan to Grand Central Station. Over 100,000 people used the subway the first day it opened.

1904~Continued David B. Hill was governor when the subways were opened. Now a days the subways are running 24/7 and over 4.5 million ride it every day.

1905~The Bloody Sunday Massacre The bloody Sunday Massacre killed over 100 workers and wounded 300. Took place in Russia. A group called the Demonstrators were basically a protest group for to many hours of work and little pay. One day the Demonstrators marched to the Czar Palace and the guards didn’t know if they were armed or not so they opened fire. So many deaths and injuries just to have more rights and better working environment. We should all thank the ones that risked their lives for ours.

1906~Earthquake in San Francisco The earthquake started at 5:12 am April 18, It effected over 375,000 square miles, half of switch was in the Pacific Ocean. Death toll is uncertain (around 3,000) 225,000 were left homeless. (half of population.)

1906~Continued The fire that was started because of the earthquake went on for 74 hours and destroyed almost ¼ of San Francisco. When the earthquake was happing someone saw a bull roaming and the person thought that it was a demon sprit that came out of the earth and cause the earthquake. Cost over $400 million dollars in damage. ($8 million in today worth.)

1907~John Wayne was born John wayne was born May 26, He was 13 pounds at birth. He was married 3 times and had 7 kids. He was a very heavy smoker. He smoke up to 5 or 6 packs a day. John Wayne

1908~New Years first ball drop The first one that was built by an immigrant metal worker. His name is Jacob Star. When he was in collage he made it on his extra time. It was made of iron and wood, with 25-watt light bulbs. It was 5 feet in diameter. It weighed 700 pounds. First New Year Ball

1908~Continued Today’s version weighs 11,875 pounds. It is 12 feet in diameter. Has an aluminum frame. It is made up of 2,688 water fold crystal triangles. There is an estimate one million people in Times Square to watch the ball drop now days. There is also 1 ton of confetti is released. It is about twice as big as it was in the past.

1909~Plastic was invented Plastic was invented by Leo Backland. He didn’t quite invent plastic all by his self. He just improved phenol formaldehyde. He also invented the first fully synthetic resin. It was called Bakelite.

1909~Continued He made another invention but sold it for $1,000,000. He then bought a lab where he made Bakelite. It is still used in household products, radios, electrical products and many more. You many also see it in many fine jewelry.
