TECH 212 PRINCIPLES OF GRAPHIC DESIGN AND PRINT PRODUCTION

Personal Schedule 8/25/10 Adobe InDesign Description A personal schedule using only line, type and shading. Competency This assignment was my first trial with InDesign and a basis for improvement for my other designs to come. Reflection I believe this is not one of my best designs, but gives me a good brief introduction to what Graphic Design is about. My design is simple and gets the message across to the audience.

Book Cover 9/28/10 Adobe InDesign Description Formulate a creative idea for a book jacket called, “The Power of Color”. Competency This book jacket conveys my knowledge of color, gradients, clipart and the use of dynamic lines. Reflection This assignment was a good test to see how much I have improved over the past few weeks. I believe this assignment helped me realize the importance of readability. Furthermore, I believe this assignment showed me the importance of displaying a clear message.

Ad Re-Design 9/8/10 Adobe InDesign Description Using only type and line art to re-design a “newspaper business card ad”. Competency I utilized the knowledge I have gained thus far to display a clear message. I show my understanding of direction of objects by having the semi-truck going into the ad, instead of out of the ad. Reflection I liked the assignment because it gave me a chance to improve a real ad. This assignment taught me to use only the most useful information.

POSTCARD Description A postcard created with the use of visual structure. Creating front and back of postcard on the same sheet. Use peer feedback to improve the postcard. Competency In this assignment I show my understanding of visual structure. I used one of my own pictures that is relevant to the postcard idea and the use of typography. Reflection I liked this project in that it taught me how to successfully create a postcard. The peer evaluations were helpful in creating my postcard. I liked that I could use one of my own pictures and not someone else’s. 10/26/10 Adobe InDesign & Photoshop

WORD DESIGN 9/30/10 Adobe InDesign & Photoshop Description A word created using type and art. The art represents what the word says. Competency I show my knowledge of making art capture what I am trying to say. The use of Photoshop to fix any anomalies I encountered. Reflection I liked this assignment because it tested my imagination. I thought this assignment was fairly easy to accomplish, but gave me more practice with InDesign which you can probably never have enough of.

MAGAZINE 11/23/10 Adobe InDesign & Photoshop Description A magazine cover that looks virtually identical to a notable actual magazine called Field & Streams. Using type and a picture. Competency I show my attention to detail to try and capture all the visual structures with unity. This shows my increasing knowledge of the InDesign software. Reflection This assignment really made me pay close attention to detail. I believe this was one of the tougher projects to do. I spent hours on the type just to get it real close to the actual. I am satisfied with this design, but given more time I would have brought the deer’s antlers in front of the title.

POSTER 11/8/10 Adobe InDesign Description This is a poster that displays a message to Gamers to power down their gaming systems to save energy. The poster shows motion, has power colors, and has eye contact. Competency I demonstrate what I have learned throughout the course up to this point of how to capture an audience. I applied a shadow to bring “GAMERS” out front. The photo I used is colorful and portrays motion. Reflection This project tested my ability to grab attention and I feel I did that. Making a poster to tell people to save energy was somewhat difficult to do. The feedback from my peers was helpful in deciding if I need to change anything.

TATTOO 10/19/10 Adobe Illustrator Description This is a tattoo that represents someone who loves music. Competency I used what I have learned about Adobe Illustrator to make a presentable tattoo. I made the use of layers to trace the image. Reflection I learn how to better use the tracing tool. This assignment was probably the hardest one I did, because it tested my artist ability to draw. Needless to say I am not an artist. The assignment was challenging and made good use of the different tools in Illustrator.

LABEL 12/02/10 Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop Description This is a soft drink bottle label. The purpose was to create a realistic label for a soft drink. Competency I display my further understanding of Adobe Illustrator. The use of Photoshop to make any adjustments to the fist. I demonstrate my knowledge of effects in Illustrator to rotating text and images. Reflection The project taught me about how to get as much information possible with limited space available. I believe that I made a realistic bottle label to the best of my ability. The project dealt with a fair amount of critiquing and imagination. I believe that this label would grab attention.

LOGO DESIGN 11/17/10 Adobe Illustrator Description This is a Logo design for the roller derby team call “Sugar Beaters”. Using type and drawing tools as well as shapes. Competency I demonstrate my ability to create a logo based on given specifications and desires made by the Sugar Beaters team organizers. I used shapes, type with stroke, the scale tool and the drawing tool. Reflection This project taught me to ask questions to determine what the customer wanted their logo to look like. I had a difficult time coming up with an ideal design that would satisfy the customer’s demand.
