Cold War Timeline 1945 – World War II ended Soviet Union set up communist government in Eastern Europe The Cold War began, a long period of hostility between Soviet Union and democratic Western Europe. Marshall Plan – US recovery plan that offered money to help European countries recover from WWII – Winston Churchill said, “An Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent.” The Iron Curtain was a symbolic separation between communist east Berlin and west Berlin.
