Introduction: Course Overview Social Studies 9

Canada: Opportunities and Challenges General Outcome 9.1 Issues for Canadians: Governance and Rights Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how Canada's political processes impact citizenship and identity in an attempt to meet the needs of all Canadians. General Outcome 9.2 Issues for Canadians: Economic systems in Canada and the United States Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of how economic decision making in Canada and the United States impacts quality of life, citizenship and identity. Local and Current Affairs - Bring your CAJ (current affairs journal) to each tutorial! That means, reading the newspaper and watching the news!!

CAJ Continued… Step 1: Summarize the issue Step 2: Answer the following questions: a. Whose viewpoint is expressed? b. What does the author want us to think? c. Whose viewpoints are missing, silenced, or discounted? d. How might alternative perspectives be represented and/or found? e. How would alternative perspectives contribute to your understanding of the text? f. What action might you take on the basis of what you have learned? Step 3: Present your journal to the class each week in our tutorial. You will be given a mark out of 10 for being prepared with your summary and the completed questions. Step 4: Organize your weekly journals on-line OR in a binder - your choice!

Tutorial (Specifics) Count for 10% of your final mark. You will receive a 2 if you attend and participate, a 1 for simply attending and a 0 for an unexcused absence. 10 marks for your CAJ each week If you miss a tutorial – listen to the archive and send me the paragraph. Most are really good about doing this, but others are losing marks! Along with your summary – you must provide your CAJ in the as well.

How many hours for social per day? It is CRITICAL that you put in the required hours per day for this course. If not, it will be very difficult for you to pass this course. Please make sure you let me know if you are having trouble Keeping up!! Communication is the best policy. 80 minutes per day PLUS homework = SUCCESS Lessons are challenging! They are going to get you to think about how the issues affect you! Your quality of life and your role as a citizen in this country.

Critical Thinking This course asks you to be open- minded Think critically about the issues and the big ideas that are introduced in your lessons
